Okuizome is a Japanese celebration where you pretend that your baby is eating their first meal when they turn 100 days old. You make the whole spread and “feed” it to them with chopsticks. My husband/kid have Japanese heritage, but I think there’s a Korean version of this ritual too. (Full disclosure— we hadn’t heard of it until someone on my Reddit bump group posted about their baby’s okuizome and we thought it would be fun! 😂)
Anyways, the menu traditionally consists of a whole grilled fish, a clear soup with a shell, rice cooked with azuki beans, a simmered dish, and pickles. I bought the nimono (assorted simmered vegetables) and pickles from a specialty grocer. The soup is clams in a broth of kombu and sake. I rubbed the red snapper with salt and a touch of sesame oil and then broiled it. If we were really proper about it, the fish should have been skewered in this fancy way, buuuuttt we don’t have long enough skewers so oh well.
Baby was confused by the whole thing, lol. Parents ate well.
