This was the first time I tried this Italian wine variety. I usually buy Italian wine to have with either pasta or Napolitana style pizza. This was very different from any Italian wine I have ever had before.
Profile much closer to a cab.
Thoughts?

yes love it! When I’ve sold it as a somm I say that it’s like cab and merlot blend just massive and tannic.
Yes and it needs time…lots of time.
Some are amazing, some are just ok
Yes, it’s great stuff, especially with age. In 2020, I had a bottle of Arnaldo Caprai’s 1993 Sagrantino di Montefalco (which Arnaldo or at least someone on staff told me on IG that it was the first vintage after the DOC was created in ’92) and it was fantastic. I’ve had the other big guns – Scacciadiavoli, Antonelli and Paolo Bea – they are great wines. But need time.
There are also some nice Sagrantino wines coming out of the Rogue Valley in Oregon, I particularly like the one made by Vinous Obscura / Golden Cluster.
Way too tannic for me.
2008 Antonelli Montefalco Sagrantino is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I have one bottle left and savouring it.
It’s definitely a big wine.
Yes it’s great. Very very bold and tannic
Extreme tannin. Very delicious with hearty Italian/rustic cooking, otherwise needs 20 years past vintage date IF it’s a good wine. BS. Versions aren’t the same
Very tasty with age and decanting! In Montefalco and the surrounding area they also make this dish of bacon (barbazza) cooked in Sagrantino with sage. It is an incredible example of “what grows together goes together.”
Sagrantino montefalco is the most underrated and lesser known of all. Some absolutely stunning wines
I’ve visited Montefalco a few times to visit producers.
I’m very much team Paolo Bea and had a great visit there in 2019.
Passito is where this grape truly shines. Would highly recommend stuffing a few in a cellar.
I was excited to try Sagrantino in my recent trip to Umbria this summer. Then I tried it and…I felt disappointed. For me has an absolute lack of acidity, and that’s a no go, sorry.
Tannins are harsh and bottle ageing does its thing for sure, but I tried several and the best one was a sweet one.
I was expecting some small producer, making a modern sagrantino, with not so classic profile and more acidity, but it just does not exist
I remember opening one when I was young and inexperienced, my tasting notes were “it’s like there’s a party in my mouth and everyone is drinking mylanta”
