If I’m in a neighborhood I don’t know I prefer a basic diner breakfast over anything else. I don’t think anybody would describe them as great but really good ones feel like home.

This is from Townhouse Diner 38th & 2nd.

Squires Diner in Financial District. Never crowded, old school, with a local crowd.

I love diners and I’ve been sad to see some of my favorites close since COVID. Some of my favorites that are thankfully still around: Family Corner on Ditmars in Astoria. Gracie’s Diner and Ritz Diner on UES. Flame diner near Lincoln Center, City Diner on UWS.

Consistency is key! Always get what I expect. Not the best but always fulfilling and satisfying. I love court sq diner in LIC for that!

Gemini and Orion are right down the road from here. Both great. I also love Westside Restaurant on like 68th and Broadway. I always go there for pancakes and coffee before a morning movie at Lincoln Square.

It’s not a basic diner by any means, but Kellogg’s Diner satisfies a baseline requirement of a good diner for me which is actually being open 24/7.

Maybe basic but my favorite is Carnegie Diner on 57th and 7th. Incredible pancakes and right on top of the q stop

Malibu diner on 23rd in Chelsea. Pretty reliable for always being open. One of the few remaining 24 hours ones in nyc.

If you’re willing to go just past the NYC border, the Golden Reef Diner in Rockville Center (directly off a LIRR stop) is one of the best diners I’ve ever been to in my entire life. I ordered a slice of spanikopita and out came in individually made piece of spanikopita the size of my head PLUS a salad.

In no particular order, The Ritz on 62nd and 1st. Hector’s in Chelsea (RIP), Malibu in Chelsea, Joe Jrs, Square Diner, West Side Restaurant, Viand Cafe, Juniors in Brooklyn, Donut Pub (in Chelsea and Astor place), B&H, Little Poland, and Waverly.

For price and aesthetic, I like Washington Square Diner.

Also, does any diner out there serve hash browns? I’m talking shredded potatoes, not home fries
