Now, I know a lot of us are gardening and we need some sort of insecticide or something to get rid of insects. Well, you know, we have a lot of birds here. And we have a big vegetable garden. Numerous vegetable gardens around here. But I also have birds that have come in, more birds than we ever thought we’d have here. 60 species of small birds that depend on our garden. So whether we’re eating out of there or they’re eating out of there or enjoying some water, anything I put on my plants, be it regular spray or organic, may not be to the birds. Think of the insects that they’re eating. Are those greens or seeds okay off the plants? Is that spray going to be okay for them or their babies? And as far as beneficial insects, we have that here, too. So if you’re spraying good insects, the same spray you’re putting on will end the beneficial insects as well. So we have to be very careful. Now I do understand a lot of you have to use something cuz after all growing lettuce like this, you may want to protect the lettuce for your family. Keep in mind any spray you use will hurt the birds. This is squash plants and the goldfinches come in to eat the green leaves. We have a lot of different species of birds here. So, we have to be extra careful never to use anything toxic and just never to use any type of insecticide at all. But there are things that we can do. And I do get rid of insects when I need to. Here is an oral dipping a grasshopper into some nectar. And where is she going? She’s going to feed that grasshopper to her babies. Now, had the plant been sprayed and the grasshopper had toxins in it, think about that. And we have all different species of birds nesting here. And the babies are eagerly awaiting either a little bit of greens or insects, even the hummingbirds, who not only feed on the nectar I put out, but also feed on pollen, nectar from the plants, as well as insects around the garden. So, I’m going to be extra careful. You do what you need to do, but I’m going to give you an alternative to getting rid of many of the insects we may have around here. It may look a little unusual, but why not? It works and it’s organic. Hi, it’s Robbie from Southern California, and this is my little hand vacuum cleaner that you can buy. So many different models. Oh, sometimes I go around and use it to remove seeds off of plants, but there are other things we can do with it. We’re going to go over three methods of getting rid of insects. I will say it will not work on aphids or anything that’s sticking to the plant. You’ll see here, not really good. May get rid of half of them, but we’re going to go into different things we can do. Now, there’s a little critter. He’s just no good on my plants. And I can just vacuum him up. Now, there are a lot of different insects we can vacuum. We’ll talk about so many things today. I think you’ll get ideas on that. Now, look inside. There he is. I didn’t have to touch him. I didn’t have to squish them or do anything like that. And I most certainly didn’t have to spray them or put any type of insecticide, be it organic or whatever, on my plants. So, my plant is fine. And he’s now sitting in the vacuum cleaner. You can buy so many of these car vacuum cleaners. They’re portable. They’re rechargeable. They’re fantastic to have around. I originally started getting them to get rid of the big spiders that were in the corner of the house, maybe up on the ceiling that were crawling around and they were so easy to vacuum up and take outside. There he is. We’ll talk about disposing him in a few seconds, too. But see him in there. Now he is off my plant and he is inside my vacuum cleaner. You could go around and do that with different squash bugs and grasshoppers and all kinds of stuff. It works pretty good. And think about it here. No spray, nothing toxic at all. I’m not putting anything as far as insecticides into the environment. The plants are not being harmed. No animals are going to be harmed except for the let’s say bugs I’ve decided to vacuum up. But it works really well and all you have to do is just vacuum them up. Now, we’ll talk about disposing them in a minute, but I want you to get another way to get rid of some of these pests on our plants that we do have to get rid of. It works really good for whitefly as well. So, try it on different insects, maybe. And maybe you’ve already got one of these portable mini vacuum cleaners, but if not, they’re under 20 bucks and they’re so cheap. But see him in there? He’s in there. And he is not on my plant anymore destroying my beautiful plants. Now, I want to say one thing. These vacuum cleaners, once he goes in there, he can’t come out if you put that down and walk away because he can crawl out of the top because you got a filter there. So, he’s on the inside. So, stuff it with something if you’re going to sit it down and do something else besides disposing them right away. And don’t bring it in the house or you’ll end up having these little critters in the house. So, put it outside until you empty it out. But now he’s in there and they’re off your plants. No insecticide, no poisons, no nothing out there. Your birds are safe. Your good beneficial insects are safe as long as you don’t vacuum them up. And if you do, just knock them out if you accidentally get a ladybug in there. But this is how easy it is. Now, as far as disposing them, you can take them over to a trash can or your compost bin or whatever you want to do. You just take the filter out, shake them out. You get rid of them the way you want to get rid of them. take them for a long walk away from your plants or well, like I said, it’s up to you how you want to dispose of them. But that’s all you need to do is shake them out. They’re no longer on your plant. So, you don’t have to feel so bad about it. And it’s better than spraying the whole plant and then destroying all the good insects that are on there that you actually want around the environment. The bees won’t get harmed. Nothing’s going to get harmed by this. Then you just clean it up, put it back together, and you’re good to go. They are so convenient to have that I have one always charged up, ready to go. Usually in the house because I’m trying to get rid of something in the house, but always ready to use outside if I need to. Now, there’s other methods of getting rid of insects, too. Here, I’ve got a bunch of aphids on here. Now, I could hose the plant down and do that, but if you know, there’s a lot of places if you look that they’re congregating in certain parts of the plant. So, what you could do with that is simply trim that off. The this particular plant, it’s a milkweed, is going to need to be trimmed anyways. So, I can just trim it. You can a lot of times trim the insects off because they usually find a favorite spot on the plant. Though, it doesn’t work that way always. It’s just another option. Now, with insects, if I am trimming them off, I’ll throw them all in a bucket and then I will throw them in the trash. If it was powdery mildew, I would just put that in the compost that will disappear. But it’s that easy to get rid of, let’s say, a lot of the bugs cuz remember, some of these will be eaten by birds and your beneficial insects. You don’t have to get rid of all of them, but you want to keep a good check on your plants or they can destroy your plants. Now, since this is mainly on the mini vacuum cleaner, the small car vacuum cleaners, I want you to be sure and understand that you have to cork it when you vacuum up the bugs. Sometimes I use an old rubber glove I used in the yard for gardening. But again, this is important because I know if you missed it when I said it the first time, they will crawl out. So, put a cork in it and keep them there until you’re ready to dispose of them. For the third method of getting rid of insects, what I use around here when I have small bugs that I need to get rid of, plain old dish soap, like Dawn, just a little bit, maybe a teaspoon to a cup of water, and then just kind of suds it up. Put some gloves on and just rub it on the insects. That will eliminate the insects. These insects breathe through their skin, and once the soap is on there, they’re not going to last. So you just go through with a rubber glove and your little sudsy water on your hand and kind of just do that. Squish it on. You don’t have to squish the bugs. Just get it on them really good. It does not hurt the plant. And that’s all you got to do. I mean, just see the plants covered in insects. Same thing there. Now, you are eliminating the bird food, but you are eliminating a lot of your insects doing that. And this is what a lot of us have to do. I understand because you have to feed yourself and your family. And that comes first. I will say that and I absolutely understand that. But this is a way of doing it that is not toxic. It’s quick. It’s fast. And you can get rid of all of them this way. Now, these insects are on my milkweed, but I know they get on our lettuce. They get on our brasacas. You could do the same thing with that. I just don’t have any insects right now to show you on my brasacas because the birds are cleaning them all off. And these are a little bit different than the regular aphids, but I just wanted to show you. Then you just spray it down really good. It will go into the ground. All the insects, they’ll become compost in the soil. So, it’s a win-win and your plant is free from insects, at least most of them. We’re not trying to get rid of 100%. We’re trying to eliminate, you know, enough that they’re not going to damage the plant. I hope I gave you some ideas. I want to read your comments on this. What do you think of the vacuum cleaner? I really held back on that and I thought, okay, and I know the questions that are coming because so many of you are going to have ideas on how to use it. And don’t use a shop back. It’s too powerful. You’ll vacuum up your plant. These small vacuum cleaners work perfect. Leave your comments and I know we’ll have a whole lot more to discuss soon. So, with that, have a wonderful day and don’t forget to eat what you grow. Bye-bye. And do it organically if you can. Bye-bye.

Hello Robbie ❤
I love that vacuum cleaner trick . Keep sharing your great ideas and hacks .
Hi Robbie!
❤
This is a great idea in july we have the japanese bugs i will by a vacuum! Thank you❤
That was so cool watching the oriole marinade her food !
Hi Robbie hummer dinky❤
Thanks Robbie! Love my wild birds❤
I use my dish soap to kill squash bugs which will decimate my squash plants and is ok
And for squash bugs, I tried to vacuum cleaner thing, and they can duct tape and take the eggs off of the leaves, and they will still decimate your plants. The only way I can get rid of them is Worcester show is with dish soap.
Thank you! The aphids I just spray with my water hose. 😊
I like the vacuum idea. I thought you were going to give the bugs to your chickens. ❤
Thank you Robbie for all of the wonderful ideas, I do have a question? How are all of your hummingbirds standing next to each other drinking. I have them flying around yelling at each other, and when one is drinking another comes by and makes that one go. So I hear them squaking at each other, and hurry up and drink and fly away. I also have hornets that hang around the bird feeders, even though I have feeders that have a water moat for ants and they are bee protected! So any ideas about this? Blessings to all.
I keep telling my birds they are not doing a good job at all on some bugs, guess they don't like their taste😂😂😂 i fingersquash my pests! But for the white flies a mini vac might not be a bad idea. Ladybug nymphs i happen to bring inside on some green food i take back into the garden.
FANTASTIC vacuum idea !
Budworms???😣
What if you vacuumed up a little diatomaceous earth to kill the bugs that you vacuum up. 🙂
I cant wait. I get the tubs & totes I ordered today. Its cool & damp today with the temps on the downside. Thanks to you ive been able to have food to eat & store. I haven't seen too many pests because of the tulle you suggested. Thank you!
I wish there was a little blower that size for that price! That would be very helpful with our tote garden.
Awesome video. I’ve used the little vacuum for a couple of years. It works pretty well except for the Japanese beetles, my nemesis. Next season I will try the Dawn and water trick. Brilliant. Thanks for all you do Robbie. Take care.
Do you have any suggestions on how to keep aphids away from flowers?
Where we live in the humid south bugs are awful at times. Aphids only ever eat certain plants, so I don't worry about those. Ever year I lose my zucchini and squash to vine borers, no matter what I do. I only spray something called earth's ally on my cannabis plants because they will mold here and be ruined because of the rain we often get here in the fall. I never see the good insects on cannabis unless they are eating the bad ones. It's supposed to be safe for wildlife, people and bees.
I love your channel!! Tip: get to your point quicker…pretty please😊
I had mealy bugs all over my cucumber I was trying to grow this year in a tub. I was just starting to spray with an organic bug spray when I saw something…. another bug. This little bug was orange and black. I thought to myself, is that what it think it is? I quickly checked on my phone and sure enough…. it was lady bug larva. I looked some more on the cucumber plant and there were several more…like at least 9 lady bug larva. They were feasting on all the mealy bugs. Yeah! Nature to the rescue! I didn't spray anymore and now my cucumber is making a come back. 😊
I can attest that the vacuum idea does work. Although, I have used it to capture the occasional wasp that used to get in the house or even the occasional large tree roaches we have here in Texas. But yes…as Robbie said, take the vacuum outside or put something in the canister opening to block the insect from coming back out again. I had that happen too. Kind of defeats the purpose of capturing the darn thing to begin with. 😂
Off topic, but oh my, I just saw a video about a new law enacted for over 2 million California residents. Are you in that zone for fire that requires all fences and woody plants to be removed from within 5 feet of your house? It looks like it includes decks and mulch as well. I had no idea that was going on. I'm in Michigan. I feel sorry all the people affected by this.
For anything on my squash plants, cucumber, etc. that has a fuzzy texture, I use duct tape rolled around my fingers sticky side out. Just requires a soft touch and doesn't damage the plant. Not only does it pick off the adult bugs, but the nymphs, eggs, and other pests also residing, like aphids. It works wonderfully! I also go over the stem and crease the tape between where leaf meets stem. I do a visual inspection next time only areas where they hang out and repeat. They have never returned the rest of the season. I will try the vacuum method for white fly and leaf hopper. I caught a few leaf hoppers with tape but they are fast to fly away.
Dueling vacuums, Gary's and yours. He's out at night vacuuming good pollen. You're out in the daytime vacuuming bad bugs away. Missed y'all, thank you.
