Pickled herring? I once stayed at a hotel in Shijiazhuang that was popular with Russians. Their breakfast buffet was equal parts Chinese food and Russian food. You haven’t lived until you’ve had a large man with a beet red nose recommend the congee and pickled herring at 8am.

Eh, in my country, this is one of the ways to wash down strong alcohol. So some cafes/restaurants have those on menu for heavy drinkers.

Its really good if prepared correctly. You can add butter and onions the bread with the fish. Also boiled potato + this fish make a great combo

This is sledz, poorly presented, but its quite yummy if you can give it a chance.
It can typically be in oil, pickled or in a mayo/dill sauce. Best on rye bread.
