There are actual rules, you know, in our increasingly chaotic world. And one is: If it comes from the sea via a can, it’s fantastic with tater tots. Clear?

Not the cheapest, but consistently among the best canned smoked herring, Fangst packs this fine fish in organic, cold-pressed rapeseed oil. (That’s canola for us North Americans, and it’s the good stuff.) The white pepper and wild garlic—in my family we call it bear garlic (Allium ursinum)—fits in with the strong beechwood smoke very well.

I don’t know the breadth of the Hardee’s empire, but here in the South their outposts are dotted all around. (Does corporate cousin Carl’s Jr. do biscuits and tots??) A small order of tater tots and a butter biscuit were the makings of a mighty good herring sandwich for breakfast today. I splashed it with Yellow Bird’s jalapeño hot sauce, but honestly that might’ve been overkill at 7 a.m. Make good choices, people.

Speaking of which, I may not have ever cracked the lid on SILD No. 1 at my desk before. I definitely ought to mention that this is a strongly fragrant can. The smoke is prominent, but the herring is also particularly forceful. I was in my office with the door shut, but within 2 seconds of me popping the top just enough to tip and drain the oil, I heard my next door neighbor cry out, “Holy hell, dude, what’re you eating in there today?” I might need to note this down as an Outside Can.

God I would smash this so hard. I was briefly worried that was ketchup at first, but I see all is well. Sad to say I haven’t seen a Hardee’s near me in years otherwise I’d be down to try this too.

I like the cut of your jib.
