The European artisanal gelato sector is riding a wave of positive growth, spearheaded by Italy, as the entire supply chain prepares for a record-breaking SIGEP World – The World Expo for Foodservice Excellence, slated for January 16-20, 2026, at the Rimini Expo Centre.

New data confirms the Italian frozen dessert is maintaining its status as a key revenue driver, offering a substantial opportunity for equipment, ingredients, and technology providers.

Latest figures from Circana’s CREST data highlight the dominance of three Southern European nations. Italy, France, and Spain collectively account for 68% of gelato portions sold across Europe’s top five markets. Critically, the key summer season saw continued value growth in Italy, hitting +3% compared to 2024. This period is vital, as it concentrates at least 70% of the estimated €3 billion Italian sector turnover.

“Despite a few uncertainties linked to unfavourable climatic conditions, summer is a gelato consumption driver in Italy, France and Spain,” explained Matteo Figura, executive director of Foodservice Italia at Circana. “Gelato confirms its status within the small accessible luxury category that consumers are not willing to relinquish.” The Italian Gelato Makers’ Association (AIG) confirmed the robust summer performance, with central Italy (+5%) and the south (+4%) driving the value increase.

This positive momentum sets the stage for the 47th edition of SIGEP World, organised by Italian Exhibition Group (IEG). The event is forecasting its largest show ever, hosting 1,300 exhibiting brands from over 30 countries and attracting professional operators from over 150 nations.

SIGEP’s artisanal gelato offering will cover the entire value chain. The exhibition will feature advanced machinery, including the latest generation equipment and refrigerated display cases, as well as ingredients and raw materials, encompassing high-quality ingredients and semi-finished products. Additionally, it will showcase design and tech solutions, with innovative design, furnishings, and digital tools tailored for various business models — from independent gelaterias to quick-service restaurants and luxury hospitality.

SIGEP World is intensifying efforts to bolster the presence of Italian gelato globally through targeted initiatives. The ‘Sigepland’ project targets Germany, the world’s second-largest market by the number of gelaterias. The initiative includes personalised guided tours and a direct Munich-Rimini flight to facilitate networking for thousands of German professionals.

Recognising the vast potential of the Asian market, India has been selected as the Guest Country for 2026. A large delegation of Indian operators will attend to explore the full spectrum of traditional Italian artisanal gelato. Furthermore, the “What is Gelato?” digital campaign, in collaboration with Acomag (Gelato Machinery Manufacturers) and Unione Italiana Food, will run workshops and masterclasses aimed at educating foreign investors on the culture, quality, and innovative applications of Italian gelato in global catering.

The event will also host the highly anticipated Gelato World Cup, where reigning champions Italy will defend their 2024 title against 11 other top nations, combining technical rigour with artistic prowess.
