Marking 100 years of Pinotage, South Africa’s story of creativity and collaboration unfolds on Singapore’s global stage

The vibrant rhythm of South Africa came alive in Singapore during South African Focus Week 2025, a dynamic celebration of culture, business, and collaboration. The event brought together senior government officials, business leaders, and creative minds from both nations to honour South Africa’s enduring legacy and growing partnership with Singapore.

From the moment the evening began, the audience was immersed in South Africa’s essence — a nation that sings through joy and sorrow, dances in triumph, and celebrates unity through its art and culture. This lively spirit set the tone for a night that intertwined storytelling, business dialogue, and cultural exchange.

A highlight of the celebration was the announcement of the first-ever Pinotage Festival in Singapore, scheduled for 25 October 2025, marking the centenary of South Africa’s signature grape. Presenters Ms Sizwe from the South African Wine Centre and Ms Annette from Message in a Bottle spoke passionately about the legacy of Pinotage, created in 1925 by Professor Abraham Isaac Perold. They described how Singapore has become a gateway for South African producers to reach new markets in Southeast Asia, with local consumers increasingly drawn to the authenticity, heritage, and craftsmanship behind South African wines.

In a symbolic toast, guests raised their glasses “to a future where South Africa and Singapore create opportunities together,” celebrating a shared vision of inclusivity, innovation, and mutual prosperity. The evening’s programme also featured remarks from South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, who expressed heartfelt appreciation for Singapore’s hospitality and humourously recounted her travel experiences. She highlighted South Africa’s ongoing transformation into a business-friendly destination, promising to replace “red tape with a red carpet” for investors.

The Minister outlined South Africa’s ambitious goals, including hosting the first Olympic Games on African soil and securing a Formula One Grand Prix in the coming years. She encouraged attendees to explore South Africa’s diverse provinces such as the Free State, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga, rich with investment potential, alongside iconic landmarks like Robben Island, the Cradle of Humankind, and the Kruger National Park.

As the evening drew to a close, guests enjoyed South African music, food, and wine — a true taste of the nation’s spirit. A final toast honoured President Cyril Ramaphosa, recognising his leadership as Africa’s first G20 President, followed by a video highlighting South Africa’s message of unity, resilience, and creativity. Representatives from Brand South Africa later shared insights into the nation’s evolving business landscape, inviting Singaporean partners to discover why South Africa continues to inspire new possibilities across industries.
