Hello, fellow winos! This is my first post here on r/wine. I am new to the wine scene, only two years in, but I am lucky enough to work in a restaurant where I’m able to taste a lot of amazing wines. I received my Level 1 certification from CMS this past July and will take Level 2 when I am confident enough to spend the money! I hope posting here helps me find opportunities to discuss with people more knowledgeable than myself.

That said, here is my first wine note. I never expected I’d begin with a sweet, but I finished a bottle tonight and was eager to share my thoughts.

GENERAL INFO:
PRODUCER: Thunevin-Calvert
APPELATION: Maury, FR
VINTAGE: 1974
GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Grenache? (info is scarce)

👁️: A beautiful ombré from a deep garnet core to a saffron-colored edge.

👃: Dried, sweet figs and other fruits. Caramel. Toffee. Nutmeg and walnuts. Completely sweet and warm, like Christmas.

👅: More of that typical fortified character, with the raisin note making the first impression. Stewed raspberries. Sweet for sure, but with a brightness that cuts through – like tasting the clean, tart smell of berry compote while it’s simmering. Then, a segue into caramel and toffee notes on the backend, with subtle baking spices to liven it up.

This is a long entry – I try to avoid calling this many notes. I tend to find it pretentious, but these kinds of wines always create a really clear picture in my head. I think the south of France makes the best fortified wines in the world. I’ve tasted much older and much pricier examples, but this is a great one for the price, $37 for 750mL at K&L. Drank slowly over about 45 days, and it held up.
