Detroit’s 2025 Best New Restaurants & Dining Experiences

We count down the Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Top 10 New Restaurants and Dining Experiences for 2025.

A Ferndale restaurant that earned accolades for its fine dining will shut its doors in less than two weeks.

Coeur restaurant on 9 Mile in Ferndale announced on Wednesday in Facebook and Instagram posts that the restaurant is closing, citing the current “economic climate” and calling it “less than ideal.”

The restaurant’s last day of service is on Sunday, Oct. 19.

“When we opened Coeur, we had noble ideals: to cook with the best products, to pay our team fairly, and to create a truly special dining experience here in Ferndale that was welcoming to all,” the post read.

Coeur, led by chef Jordan Smith, topped the list as the 2024 No. 1 Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Top 10 New Restaurants & Dining Experience.

“Simply put: We can’t keep to our mission without raising prices beyond what makes sense for our guests. So after a lot of painful reflection, we’ve made the tough decision to close Coeur,” according to the post.

Comments on the post included those saddened and sorry to see it close, calling it “one of the best dining experiences” and known not only for its elevated food and desserts but its hospitality and atmosphere.

Coeur, French for “heart,” is rooted in French-inspired traditions, opened in 2023 in the former Assaggi Bistro with not only food as the focal point, but also dazzling and deftly curated desserts and a wine program. The restaurant, open Wednesday through Saturday for dinner and Sunday for brunch, also offered a chef’s five-course tasting menu, according to its website. Its patio behind the restaurant features raised beds with fragrant herbs along the walkway that make their way into the restaurant’s cocktails and other selections.

Until it closes, the owners wrote, “we’d love to see you one more time — for a tasting menu, a happy hour smashburger, or just to share a final night together in this place we care so deeply for.”

Coeur is at 330 W. Nine Mile, Ferndale; 248-466-3010 or coeurferndale.com.
