Pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and – love them or loathe them – Brussel sprouts are on families’ Christmas lists ahead of the big day.

Despite this, a number of people are choosing to reject the traditional Christmas dinner in favour of a Christmas curry.

In Carlisle, award-winning curry house, The Viceroy, is set to open its doors on December 25 to those who fancy something a little spicier.

“I’d absolutely recommend having a curry on Christmas Day,” said co-owner of the Viceroy, Alamgir Ali.

“We did our first opening on Christmas Day around about 2013 in the old restaurant but we offered a choice for the customers so they could have your traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings, or the traditional curry house menu.

“This year we’re going to stick to the food that we know inside out 100 per cent, and I want to make sure that everybody who enters and leaves the Viceroy on Christmas Day are very happy and satisfied with the food.”

The popular restaurant, which won the News & Star’s Best Curry House award in 2024, has also been back serving alcohol for six months after a very brief change, and has introduced some new menu items.

The Viceroy will also continue its popular Christmas tradition of selling curry sauces on Boxing Day.

“We’ve made Boxing Day quite famous for our Boxing Day sauces,” said Alamgir.

“We sell curry sauces every year on Boxing Day for people to use for their turkey that they’ve got left over or whatever they have on Christmas Day, and we get a huge response.

“We always hear people say that they’re sick of turkey – turkey sandwiches, turkey casserole – and that they need something different so we thought that instead of people slaving at home, why not change from the norm, come to the Viceroy and let us do the hard work and you guys can just relax and enjoy your big day.”
