The frosting looks fine enough I guess but WHAT THE HECK with the letters?! It looks like a 5 year old wrote it 😳

This is the first time I've ever tried writing on a cake and I'm really embarrassed to serve it at his party tomorrow.

How do you guys make it so beautiful?

But you tried. And it was made with love. Serve it. Tell him you tried your best. And be proud.

I think it’s kind of cute.

But if you really want: I would get a somewhat larger piping tip and go over the letters. Or, use a star tip to do dots over them. It helps me to use the frosting bag more like a bingo dabber and less like a pencil.

I think it’s charming. If you looked on Etsy I bet you’d find a kid handwriting font that was close to that.

If you really hate it go get a cheap pack of letter cutters and a pre-made pouch of colored fondant and cut them out. Michael’s or Walmart has both if your in the US.

The frosting tip was too thin. I would scrape this off and freeze the cake for 15 min, then use a skewer to gently trace out what you want to write. Make a batch of buttercream and add food coloring and try again with a bigger frosting tip ( or larger cut in the ziploc)

It’s not a fail. I’m sure your son will remember it fondly.

Don’t say that 🥺 it’s such a great start. The colors are so vibrant, and it’s made with love.

For your first time doing letters, it looks good.

Writing on cakes/cookies is HARD. It takes more practice than other decorating does. Holding a bag to write with is nothing like holding a pen or pencil.

If you have time to try and redo it and want to, that’s up to you. (Maybe watch a tips video on it?)

If it was me, I would serve it as is and if anyone dared to complain I would dare them to do better.

Were you using the colored frosting in the tubes from the grocery store?

  9. Fluffy_Fox_9650

You made it with love and let me tell you that even to a young kid will notice and appreciate that more than any store bought cake!

Also don’t be hard on yourself about the letters. Writing in frosting is incredibly difficult so for your first time you did a remarkably great job!

I bet everyone is going to love it

I think it’s super cute, you can tell that it’s made with love and your son is gonna LOVE it!

I still am not great at writing, and I’m a professional decorator. My advice is to use fondant whenever possible for writing 🙂

  13. Big_Miss_Steak_

Still a better result than my first time writing on a cake I can promise you!
Everyone has already given great advice but I’m just here to cheer you on and please post an update if you do make any changes!

Im 35 and not close to my mom. But if she made this for me I would cry from joy. This is what love looks like

Looks fire 10/10 would eat a piece

It comes with practice! No one is perfect at anything the first few (or many times) just don’t give up! This is a great start 🌈

  17. gdfingperfect

I don’t see any problem with this. It’s great.

  18. MarsBars_Mom

Depending on how old your son is, he may want to help decorate the cake, adding sprinkles or whatever. That will just increase the fond memories.

  19. Jumpy-Claim4881

It looks way better than any writing on cake I’ve tried to do!

    >This is the first time

    Exactly. Your first.
Everyone has to start somewhere, and this is actually decent.

What about your second attempt? Third attempt? So on and so forth.

Don’t beat yourself up. Keep practicing. You have a decent start, and the only way now is up.

seriously kids dont give a damn about lettering. they only care that you show up and made the effort. as long as it’s got fat and sugar they are happy. dont be so hard on yourself!

  22. Adrockdadog

If Aiden liked it…that’s all that matters. You have to start somewhere. 👍

  23. KneeSockMonster

It’s beautiful! I would have loved this as a kid and it looks delicious. I hope your son has a great birthday.

I don’t think this is a fail, it’s a mother creating a memory for her child. They do remember things like this and not what the letters looked like.
