I hated having weekends off. My old schedule was Thursday lunch work cold side and grill, Thursday night Bar, Friday morning Bar, Friday Night Expo, Saturday morning Cold side, Saturday Night Expo, Sunday Morning Bar, and Sunday night dish pit. Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday off.

  6. I worked at quite a few restaurants over the years, always as a line cook. At a few of them, I was the best. At 1 or 2, I was maybe 2nd or 3rd best. At one of them, they thought I was the worst, and hey, maybe I was. Everything was set up differently and done differently than I was used to. All day breakfast place, just with really unconventional ways of calling bills, organizing everything, etc. I got weekends off at that place and couldn’t have been happier about it. Strangely, the owner at that place was super keen on me, and I was a pig in shit rocking prep all day every day. Such a nice change of pace from line work after so many years, working 6-2 every day with weekends off, it was like I was a fucking normie.

When you move from Friday grill to Friday Pantry

  8. My current place just trades out weekends, so that no one has to use pto for their planned stuff, it’s really great.

Most toxic bullshit cool kid industry- you could literally outperform every member on the staff and if the chef or manager doesn’t like you it won’t matter, you’re b squad. Watched absolutely useless cooks play with their phones all shift and have 20% of their dishes get sent back still get prime shifts because they’re good at ass kissing I guess?

When you’re getting tipped out it hits even harder

We had a guy they took off our heavy days because he would piss everyone off the entire shift.  He had no clue that he was getting those days off because he was annoying.

I love having Sun-Tue or Mon-Wed off. You can go do shit without having to mosh through crowds on your day off.

I mean.. the hourly is the same whether I’m busting ass on the weekends or taking it chill during the week so who cares.

Being just good enough to never be worried about your job security and be well liked but not good enough to be on the busiest shifts is lowkey the best spot in the restaurants I’ve been in.

We had a cook who thought he was hot shit because he worked with the chef/owner 10 years ago for like 3 months. He was definitely shit, nothing hot about him. When we noticed he wasn’t keeping up and performing during the busy weekend shifts, we took him off the schedule those days. He was talking to me the one day (I was the sous, and my head chef was also my best friend) to tell me “I think im chefs favorite, she keeps giving me weekends off” with a real smug look on his face. I just shook my head and said “yeah man. You probably are.” He was really surprised when chef told him he should probably look for another job lol

You get paid by the hour? I’ll take the weekend off IDGAF about being the best at working.
