2022 Jean Foillard Morgon “Côte du Py”
Colour: medium ruby. On the nose: absolutely beautiful bouquet of fresh red fruits, primarily raspberries and strawberries. On the palate: predominate red berries: cranberries, raspberries, and pomegranate. Good structure; slight grip to the tannins, fairly high compared to other Beaujolais that I’ve had. Medium to high levels of acidity, was impressed due to 2022 being quite a hot vintage but retains good acidity and freshness. Decent alcohol integration, good mouthfeel, 14% and noticeable but not hot. Follows with some mushroomy earth, and leather notes. Respectable length of finish showing some meaty savory flavours, as well as some salinity and minerals.
A powerful wine that is just starting to show its stuff. I very much enjoyed drinking this over the evening and seeing how it developed. Drinking well now, but still quite young; has good structure and I feel that it can very much improve with some age. The wine noticeably got better after sitting in the glass for roughly 20-30 minutes to let it open up. Would recommend a decant if the bottle will be consumed with a meal or in a similar amount of time. No noticeable funk or anything which can occur with these more natural focused producers. Definite quality, which puts it a step up from a lot of Beaujolais, but would benefit from some time for it to show its full potential.
$50 USD from my local wine shop and I think it is still good value at that price. Will try to hold the rest of my bottles to try again with some age.
