Is something missing from this set up? I feel like the grate is really low?

    Picture not so good.

It appears you may be missing the firebox and fire grate.

I have a large and in factory setup grill is about 3 to 3 1/2″ down from the top of the lower section.

    Best wishes

You look to be missing the ring that sits on top of the fire bowl.

Edit: Or you’re missing the fire bowl itself. Hard to tell from the picture.

To me it looks like the it has the wrong size fire bowl, fire ring, and grate. If you got the grate to the proper level, you would have an inch or more opening all around the grate.

There are actually 2 sizes of fire rings for the large. One is 3″ high and one 2″ high. I have 2 large eggs with one of each. I got the 2″ one at Ace several years ago to give me more room to cook a second brisket (stacked on a grill extender). The Ace guy had it for some other factory special setup for BGE (can’t remember what he said it was) and I’m not sure if it’s even available anymore. I got the impression he sold it cheap because there was no longer any other need for it.

BTW1, My grate from CGS sits just about 4″ from the top of the gasket with the 3″ ring. The 2″ ring is in another large egg set up for pizza with a 2 level eggspander using a pizza stone on the top grate.

BTW2 Egg sizes have varied slightly over the years. I needed a bottom replacement and it was about 3/4″ larger than my top (2005). The Ace dealer gave me a new slightly larger diameter top that fits perfectly. It would not be a stretch to figure the bottom and or the fire bowl heights have also had some dimensional changes over the decades. Looks like the OP’s innards are all there and of the BGE provenance.

Looks like the fire box and fire ring belong to a medium. The grate looks like the right size
