A friend of a friend of my partner gave me a loaf of sourdough. It feels dense and somewhat moist maybe?? Is this safe to eat? What happened to this loaf?

Safe? Sure. Good? Absolutely not. They either forgot to use yeast or it’s dead.

I applaud their confidence in giving that to another person. I bet they put their pants on two legs at a time

Probably? But it looks like a dough rock so I wouldn’t touch it

It won’t kill you (probably), but this is not edible in any other sense.

There is..a lot of learning to be done based on this sourdough. I wish I had this bakers blind confidence

You eat that, you will wish up and down to any god you believe in for a swift death because that will kick the heck out of your guts!!! Tummy ache incoming!!!!!

Why would you want to? 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is why you should slice your bread before you give it away. I had one that was beautiful to look at but was one giant air bubble on the inside.

I’m genuinely surprised you came to Reddit for this question. I think if you don’t know the answer you should eat it and test out the Darwin effect 😂🧡 but seriously don’t eat it.

It’s not going to hurt you if you eat it, but I would toss it. You might let them know that they haven’t quite reached the point where they should be giving sourdough to others.

It’s a bit stodgy. I don’t think Paul Hollywood would allow Mary Berry to eat it

Im sorry but to me this looks like a fancy cheese

The other lady asking if her bread was too brown should meet this friend of yours.. I think it’ll be an instant boost for her

does this friend of a friend of your partner hate you?

Their starter is very weak its just unfermented flour thats been cooked to a gummy paste

How long have they been making sourdough??? This is not right

I assume they are/were unaware of the finished product. Be a good friend and give them constructive feedback so they can improve their future bakes.

However, this is why I always gift half-loaves so I can see the crumb.

I’m glad I put my coffee down as I read these comments

I’m just impressed you could cut it without slicing off a finger.

Looks like your friend of a friend forgot to add yeast to the dough.

is it safe to eat—>why would you want to? it’s inedible

dear friend of friend of partner: “gee thanks for the….doorstop.

New ” breaking the Geneva Convention meme unlocked”. – i’m jealous of their faith in their own baking skill tbh.

From the looks of it, your friend did not use a freshly fed/active sourdough starter. This is what sourdough bread looks like when you take the starter straight from the fridge after not feeding it for a week and use it to make a loaf of bread. I don’t know the science exactly but it has to do with high enzymatic activity in unfed sourdough starter, which destroys the gluten network and yields a stodgy, gummy loaf.

I’m guessing the loaf smells very sour? I would say it is safe to eat. With loaves like this (I’ve made this mistake before), I’ve thinly sliced the bread, rubbed on a little olive oil, herbs/seasoning, and baked until crisp like crackers.

That’s sourdough alright, emphasis on the dough part.

Safe, but not recommended. The dough did not ferment correctly; it is severely underproofed.
