There’s a new place to go for a coffee and a catch up in the middle of Newcastle, as doors have opened on a chic new cafe that is undoudfely a slice of Instagram haven. And it has gone into the former home of a famous Italian restaurant that has stood empty for years.

Earlier this year, there was a lot of excitement when, having been a big hit elsewhere in the North East, much buzzed about business Sunday launched in a plush terrace building just a two minute walk from Newcastle city centre. After having people queuing up outside as more and more people wanted a taste in the action, it was then confirmed that Sunday had been forced to close, just a few weeks into trading.

However, after its owner vowed that ‘wasn’t the end’ for Sunday in Newcastle and a lot of hard work, it has now made a return right in the heart of town. Over the last few months several teasers appeared on Instagram hinting at its new location and now the cat is fully out of the bag, with Sunday going into the Pudding Chare building that, for years, was hugely popular Italian restaurant Mamma Mia. A place known for its budget friendly set menus and warm and welcoming atmosphere, it’s now close to a decade since it shut down and now the premises look totally unrecognisable.

The Sunday team have overhauled both the inside and outside of the building,. with the blush pink exterior immediately grabbing the attention of passersby and the plush aesthetic being carried onto the interior, with features including decadent lighting, an array of framed pictures on the wall, pottery and a vast seating area. Sunday, known for its vast array of drinks including machas and iced lattes and bold and beautiful acai bowls, welcomed its first customers last week and, after a challenging summer, owner Sophie has been overwhelmed with the love for the cafe’s new home.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, she wrote: ‘Its been so lovely starting afresh, seeing new faces and welcoming you all to our new home. Our team have absolutely smashed their first week here and we feel at home, truly. Feeling comfortable in our new shop has made such a difference and I hope we can thrive herre. Your support has been absolutely immense and we’ve had a wonderfully full shop every day! Keep it coming.’
