This is their $4.99 daily special which comes with whatever main course it is that day and two sides. The main was what I think is 2 Schnitzels and 4 pierogi and they have an assortment of sides which include some cold salads but I just took it as it comes.

They also have a similar $6.99 plate which comes with a more premium main, and you get two hot sides and 2 cold sides. The last time I got that, it legitimately was 2 full dinners for $6.99.

I always wondered why there seems to be a small amount of Polish restaurants despite such a large Polish population in Chicago, but it seems that is because the deli's have the food scene covered and restaurants would struggle to compete.

In this economy… $4.99 is highway robbery, even with the upcharge, tip, and even gratuity ! Try going to Pete’s with the same size to-go container 😒

Refreshing to see but a bit concerning as well.

This food is unfamiliar to me and I’d be hesitant to try it. That said, great lunch deal for those that like this cuisine!

I wouldn’t pay anything to watch food that expired in July

  4. My wife works near Montrose Deli and gets their lunch pretty often and it’s always a steal. She brings me home delicious zapiekanka now and then. So good.

    Yes.

My hottake about chicago: You should eat, drink, and socialize at the grocer. It’s good for you, it’s healther and its cheaper than the alternative. Often times the hotbar has a more efficent usage of food (same with Rotisery chickens at the bulk stores) .. the grocer uses the food that is either unsellable or about to go back and they prep it there. You get more variety on what you eat, it’s cheaper..

    There that’s my subway take.

This place is such a gem, and the lunch special is legit the best deal in the city.

    Not schnitzel—kotlety mielone!

My parents were Polish immigrants who used to live in Jackowe (the old Polish neighborhood on Milwaukee) and my godparents owned a Polish restaurant on Belmont near Cumberland in the 80’s (it was called Delilah’s Garden, if anyone remembers that far back!). Their whole community lived in the city back then. Nowadays, most of the Polonia community has moved to the suburbs and many in my parents generation have started returning to Poland to retire, and my generation mostly went to college and pursued more stable careers. So many delis and restaurants have shuttered in the last 20-30 years, and we don’t have the generational wealth to risk by opening new restaurants and delis in this economy!

  10. There’s one near Harlem on Montrose. It is absolutely the cheapest place that you can get groceries, especially this type of stuff and produce.

This morning I got a loaf of bread, two oranges, a can of tomato sauce, some bananas, a pound of lunch meat and a bulb of garlic for $15.

Also they always ask me if I want a bag in polish. At least I think that’s what they’re saying… 😂😂

It’s still unbelievable to me . I would go once per week to the Montrose and Narrraganset location .

The special was 3 99 then (there were 3 choices each day) and It included all you show plus 2 salad choices!!

With a soda, you could lunch well for 5 00.

If I wasn’t so continuously embarrassed by my Polish heritage, I’d probably go more often.

I know where I’m having lunch this week 🙂

You better have some sour cream for those pierogi or it’s a war crime.

Passed by this grocery store hundreds of times in my lifetime but never went in. Whenever I passed by I aways thought how atrocious the parking situation is there. I guess it’s for good reason

This place is fucking amazing. Outrageous value. Solid and comforting Polish classics. Is it the best I’ve ever had? No, but the value is unbeatable and the quality is very solid.

I used to work in the area. They were definitely racist at Montroese deli. No thanks.
