If you’ve been dreaming of an Italian summer and the delicious wines to match, a slice of that European magic is coming to McLaren Vale this October for its first-ever Fiano Day, led by Oliver’s Taranga with a celebration of their favourite wine.
If you haven’t yet met Fiano, it’s a total treat. Hailing from Southern Italy, the grape has found its second home in Australia, bringing its signature textured style that’s perfectly suited for long lunches and warm afternoons. It’s citrusy and fruity, with a hint of weight that basically makes it summer in a glass.
Oliver’s Taranga winemaker and sixth-generation vigneron, Corrina Wright, is affectionately known as the ‘Queen of Fiano’ and has been championing this variety for two decades. “Fiano is an ancient, centuries-old Italian grape, but we’re breathing new life into it in Australia; it’s perfect for our climate, and absolutely delicious,” she said.
There are now more than 70 wineries across the country producing Fiano, and according to Wine Australia, the variety has seen a huge 86 per cent increase in tonnes crushed compared to last year. Australia now has the most Fiano plantings outside of Italy.
So that’s exactly why Oliver’s Taranga decided to launch Fiano Day. It’s a national celebration of this rising star, and on October 17th, wineries across Australia will raise a glass to the grape that’s fast becoming a summer staple.
At Oliver’s Taranga, they’ll mark the occasion with the release of their 2024 Anfore Fiano, now available to taste at the cellar door.
The Oliver family has more than 85 years of grape growing behind them, and their McLaren Vale vineyard has been home to six generations of passionate winemakers. From fifth-generation grower Don Oliver to the sixth generation led by cousins Corrina and Brioni, it’s a family of tradition.
With Corrina and Brioni now at the helm, the family continues to look to the future, expanding on what they know and love. So if you needed an excuse to pour a glass of your Fiano favourite or you’re looking to discover something new, consider this your sign.
Going forward, Fiano Day will be every year on the third Friday in October!
