Just got an email for my first allocation. I'd go to 1200 a bottle but 1500 is kinda ridiculous. I'd rather get 2 Cheval Blanc any day of the week.

I say its a bargain anywhere under six million.

It is interesting what people find expensive. To suggest that $1500 is somehow dramatically more than $1200, seems off. When you spend more than about $80 a bottle you are buying something other than wine…prestige, rarity, consistency, name, etc… I have lots of them, but must acknowledge that I am not really buying wine. You can almost always find a bottle that, when tasted blind, will be as good as and similar to a $1000 bottle for 1/10th the price.

Then get Cheval Blanc. This is definitely too rich for my taste especially since I can find library vintages of Harlan for less from strong vintages, but for some, it’s worth it.

Unless you’re made of money (like nine figures), I can’t fathom spending that much on a bottle of wine at release. You could get a case of some of the best Barolo – with age – for that price.
I’m in no way trying to bash Harlan – have heard the wines are transcendent. But my god that’s a lot of money for a current release Napa cab.

I used to spend a lot on wine. Over the years I’ve realized that no wine on this earth is worth more than $250. Tops. 99% of the wine I buy these days are sub 100$. I’ve spent almost $1000 on a bottle before. Absolute waste. All you need is a good group of friends and a nice $50 red.
Playful-Ad573
$485 per bottle with a 3-bottle minimum seems a little excessive…especially for their 2nd wine. Honestly, I was excited to get The Maiden allocation and was willing to pay $250/$300-per bottle. But I wasn’t ready for $485

$1,500? Bruh
That’s like 3 1st growths lmao

Bro, same reaction. I was shocked. More than resell… Maybe they’ve got something really great?
It’s my first allocation too so I don’t want to lose my spot.

I never bought any but got on the list maybe 7-8 ago and it was 500/btl

Paid much less for DRCs. Harlan can kick rocks

I have a friend whose husband works for a high-end winery in Napa. Years ago, just after I had moved here I saw that wine going for about $400-ish/bottle at the old Gary’s Wine (which may have still been Dean & Deluca; I’m not sure), which was out of my maximum price range. Anyway, we were at a dinner and she said that she can get any wine I want for half off, and I thought $200/bottle seems better so I said sure.
“Oh no, no, no….” was her response. Apparently that $400 dollar wine is now selling for $1,200 a bottle and she was offering me half off of that. Still too much.
Turbulentbull810
Could buy your own oak barrel for that price. $1500 a bottle is $2 per milliliter or $60 an ounce. In 20 years it’s going to taste like an age $20 wine.
Kingston31470
Well if people are buying it, they can set up whatever price they want I guess.
I am French and always surprised by wine prices in the US. It is only matching the fact that people are ready to pay more. It would be difficult to make the case that you would get better “value” for it.
If you go to a French caviste with a $1500 budget…

It’s all bad. The fact they are doing this type of sh*t is exactly why the wine market has tanked in the U.S.

Harlan has been insane since (forever but especially) 2020
BmoreBlueJay
If I can buy 4-5 bottles of GC Burgundy (or a couple bottles of 1st growth BDX) for the price of one bottle of Harlan, they’re just charging too much…
Disastrous_Square_10
Verrrrry interesting in the sliding scale. My wife has been part of the list for a while. I did my due diligence and finally got her to stop buying it.
More importantly, because we have purchased since around 2010ish – and luckily sold it all – this current offering for these vintages are $1400 and $465.
That’s some slimy shit.

This reminds me, I need to cancel my Promontory allocation.

I picked up three of the maiden but no Harlan yet. Harlan is my all time favorite so I whore myself for the 2nd wines to get the chance at the big one.
I was on their list for a short while and never bought a bottle. That pricing is really set up so rich dudes can impress their buddies.

Pussy if you don’t take a full allocation!

I had my Harlan phase and still have lots of bottles from late 1990’s and early 2000’s in my cellar. But so over it. Honestly, the most idiotically overpriced and overhyped wine in the world (other than every other stupidly priced California cab, chuckle). Incredible that you can get a stunning aged Bordeaux from a stunning vintage for half the price of a new Harlan…nuts
GodNeverFarted
That price is ridiculous, and to each their own, but I disagree with a few of the comments here that say Harlan is overrated. I had a bottle of about 15 years ago that I still think about. That and Petrus are on a whole different level from anything else I’ve ever had.

Fwiw I paid $750 per for the 2013 vintage that released in 2015. So yeah doubled in 10 years. Auction value for the ‘13 is ~$1300 today which means they’re raising prices faster than the market. Supply and demand I guess. Harlan was a one and done for me
