    Q39 is fantastic. Had it a couple years ago on a trip to KC. Liked it better than Oklahoma Joe’s.

    Ya know, I joked with someone the other day when they said they were bringing they’re father to the restaurant. Said he was from KC. I responded half heartedly, “Better tell him we don’t cover everything in sauce!” Now, at that point, I was making a joke, I didn’t think they put sauce on everything. Yet, here I am, looking at this KC plate and they literally drizzled sauce all the way around the tray. I’m not judging, just found the realization humorous.

    Based on other prices on this sub, many other places would 2-3x that much. $150 seems pretty fair for that amount of food.

    We did Q39 last year.

    It was pretty mediocre. I would not go back again.

    Q39 in my experience as a KC native is good, sometimes very good, but never the best. I almost always prefer BBQ in a bar-type environment or a to-go style, which to me always seems more authentic. Making BBQ into a fancy luxury experience is antithetical t the spirit of the thing, which is why a BBQ joint operating out of a gas station is consistently considered the city’s best.

    For unassuming, non-pretentious KC BBQ at a great price, try (obviously Joe’s), Woodyard, SLAPS. For more controversial flavor/service/consistency but still staples of the city, try Rosedale, Gates, Wyandot. There’s a lot of others too but these stand out to me as being “every day” bbq joints.
