sorry for the picture quality! i got too excited and only remembered to snap some after i started eating, then promptly forgot again til i was done lol
ive never had them before, but ive seen a lot of reasons why sardines are great, so i saw a tin of porthos spiced and thought id give it a go! and i wanted to share bc i had fun ^
i made myself a platter to try them out, with cucumbers, cheese, crackers, toast, and a homemade tomato sauce i made a few minutes prior. i mostly ate them with the tomato sauce–the acid in the cooked tomatoes went really well with the fishiness. makes me wanna try them in a pasta dish!
the fish were firm, a little fishy but not in an unpleasant way. the oil flavor was good but Very Subtle–i didnt detect really any heat, only a hint of spices. a nice background note.
i had heard that porthos had a lot of scales, so i spent a long time hunting for them and "descaling" til i realized i was just stripping the skin. lesson learned for next time!
not sure how i feel about the spines. fun texture, surprised at how readily they melt in your mouth. kinda fun to eat on their own lol
overall a fun experience. im ready to try more! ^
