TACOMA, Wash. — Food from unpermitted roadside vendors in Tacoma may appear appetizing, but officials warn of significant health risks.

A recent investigation by the City of Tacoma Tax & License Compliance and police uncovered multiple food-safety violations at a home used as a kitchen by several unpermitted street food vendors in Pierce County.

Violations included unrefrigerated meat stored outside with flies buzzing around it, raw meat and vegetables on the ground, and food cooked next to trash.

The investigation followed a complaint about the location. Without a warrant, officials could only render the food inedible and issue a business license violation to the renters.

The Tacoma Police Department provided support during the operation.

Authorities emphasize the importance of eating only from permitted vendors, as these establishments undergo regular inspections to ensure food safety. “When operators know we can inspect them at any time, they tend to not do things like leave meat sitting unrefrigerated on the ground outside next to the trash,” officials said.

Officials noted that permits can be issued on-site if vendors meet the necessary requirements. If not, they are asked to leave and throw away unsafe food.

Residents are encouraged to report unpermitted vendors by calling (253) 649-1697 or submitting a complaint online.
