While Costco is known for its jumbo-size household goods and unbeatable bulk deals on grocery staples,  its bakery section shouldn’t be slept on. Costco’s own Kirkland Signature brand has produced many hits (sweet and savory!) including the Mocha Crunch Bar Cake, Pumpkin Cheesecake, and Chicken Pot Pie — all of which have gotten the stamp of approval by The Kitchn editors.

As the weather cools down and we move into comfort food season, Costco is here to provide once again. The big-box store just brought back its Kirkland Signature Shepherd’s Pie, as spotted by Lindsay, our editor-in-chief — and she’s not the only one that’s excited.

The massive pie has a beloved following, with people on Reddit singing its praises. One person wrote, “The potatoes are so buttery yum!” while another wrote, “It tastes homemade!” With that, we swiftly ordered one to our NYC office and got to tasting to see what all the hype was about.

What You Should Know About the Kirkland Signature Shepherd’s Pie

Costco’s Kirkland Signature Shepherd’s Pie has everything you love about the comforting dish: a flaky buttery crust, a hearty filling featuring a mixture of ground beef, peas, corn, carrots, mushrooms, caramelized onions, burgundy wine, all topped with yukon gold mashed potatoes whipped with milk, butter, cream, and salt. Parsley sprinkled on top adds a bit of green and makes the massive pie feel a bit more fancy.

When I say massive, I mean massive. The shepherd’s pie clocks in at just under 5 and a half pounds and can easily feed an entire family — and then some. You can find it in the refrigerated section of the store where it’s priced based on weight. The one we bought was $4.29 per pound and came out to $23.29.

Our Honest Review of Kirkland Signature Shepherd’s Pie

Before tasting, I cooked the pie based on the instructions on the package: preheated the oven to 380°F, removed the pie from its packaging, placed it on a baking sheet on the bottom rack of the oven, and let it cook for about 45 minutes.

I love shepherd’s pie, and as a vegetarian normally make a lentil-based one. Since this Costco variety had beef, I enlisted the help of some of my colleagues to taste it for me. We allowed it a few minutes to cool before digging in — and boy was this a hit.

Vicky, our studio director, was a huge fan and couldn’t get enough of the pie. “It kinda slaps!” she said. “I love the crust on the bottom, the mash is nice and not too grainy, and it’s very flavorful. I would definitely buy it if I had a family to feed.”

Maya, our associate producer, also raved over the shepherd’s pie and went in for a second helping. “It’s so yummy I don’t wanna eat the lunch I brought! The texture of everything has really held up. It’s not mushy at all.” She also loved how well-seasoned it was. “I was gonna douse it in hot sauce, like I normally do, but I didn’t need to!”
