We bought this meat 5 days ago, and we were going to make it a couple days ago, but didn't. The best by date is the 13th, it's been in the fridge the whole time, I don't want to waste it, but I don't know if it's still good, any tips on checking?

Smell and feel, not looks. It’s just oxidized which is affecting the color. Trust your nose over everything

Spoiled meat is impossible to mistake.

    Stop worrying about it.

If it was bad you wouldn’t even have to ask.

If it was stored a reasonable amount of time, you rinsed and patted it dry ( at least twice), waited a good few minutes and it didn’t stink. Yeah I’d cook it. I might season it a bit more than an excellent cut a steak since it looks like it will need a little help in the flavor department.

But as others have said, go with the nose, then with the taste. If either of those are off, toss it.

  4. It’s amazing how I’m more likely to follow the advice of people on the internet who aren’t smelling the stink of that meat.

I’d smash it, but given these seem rounds or similar, salt and then marinade. Slice into strips for tacos or quesadillas.

When at the dodgy level, nothing like a good old high temp to make everything safe and sound.

    Steak quesadilla time.

When in doubt, knock it out.

What’s the problem? No need to throw it out if there is no funky smell or slime.

It’s fine if it smells fine. Brown is from oxidation.

Cook it, smell it, taste it, then decide. I wouldn’t wait a day longer though

100% I would cook this. If it smells like meat it’s fine. If it smells funky or “off” then no go. That’s the rule. (I grew up on a cattle ranch and my Dad would easily serve us boys this meat.)

  10. What did it cost, and do you have sick days you need to use at work? Likely fine but risk/reward ration is key. 5% chance of cramps and diarrhea for a day or more vs cost to replace?

I am always in camp replace. Health and ruining an entire day or two not worth 25$ for me. God forbid you get a complicated case and need antibiotics for ecoli. Smell not always a reliable indicator.

If you can grind it and absolutely eviscerate it during cooking, then add it to a sauce then MAYBE you won’t get nausea

Yes, it only got brownish like that bc of Oxidation. There’s no harm in it at all. If it smells really bad, then I wouldn’t risk it. Go with your gut feeling before eating, so you don’t have to worry about your gut feeling afterwards!

Does it smell weirdly sweet? If so I’m out

  14. dingusjones455

Yep, I’d just cook it soon. It’ll stink or be slimy if it’s gone bad. It’s just oxidized.

  15. People seem to think their beef was slaughtered yesterday instead of weeks ago.
As long as temp was good and smell isn’t off, you should be fine.

  16. Brooklynpolarbear22

Yes. Just make sure its dead.

    But thats just oxidation.

Because science!! Blood contains iron. Iron rusts with moisture and oxygen. Following that same logic, before going bad meats usually darken them begin gaining a new texture and scent. Time and exposure is the largest factor. Moisture must reside in meat for it to be good tasting. However oxygen exposure = bacterial exposure. As long as smell and texture are maintained it should be good. However trust your gut over sense of smell. It may smell “interesting” but if your gut says, nah bruh, then nah bruh.

This looks fine just a little oxygen exposure causing the iron in the blood to begin processes that are halted by cooking
Now if it also smells way different than you expect that’s a conversation.

Aka smell your meat lmao for your health and yourself.

  18. Nah that’s green. We throw out meat like that in the butcher shop I work in. Meat can go grey especially the side that sits on a tray but once it’s green like that it’s bad. You can cut it off around if it’s just a thin layer but I’d just toss it.

  19. How much does it smell like sweet death? If only a little, cook it good

  20. Uncreative-name12

If the smell doesn’t disgust you, it’s fine.

  21. Traditional-Dig-9982

Yes unless it’s super stinky or slimy eat it

  22. Kevin33024

    I wouldn’t feed that meat to a dog I didn’t like.
