We’ve done some doozies from 1936’s 1,001 Sandwiches including the time-honored awfulness that was the Yeast Sandwich. So, I think it’s only fair that I get to do a no brainer one like the Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich. Do I pull a sneaky plus up in there? Yes, yes I do. lol

Oh , hello. Welcome to Sandwiches of History Today from 1,001 sandwiches of 1936 we’re going to be making the Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich. You might be asking, “Barry, why is this bread so goofy looking?” Well, the first thing we do is spread on peanut butter on both sides. using a shelf stable, creamy peanut butter, not sweetened, because that wouldn’t come along until 1955. I prefer chunky, but this is what we got open. Now we had slices of banana. Could we have done lengthwise? We sure could. Did we? We did not. Okay, let’s give this Peanut Butter Banana Sandwich a go. I mean, no brainer. Peanut butter and banana they go together really well. I do want to plus it up. And, before we get into it, I know a lot of you probably saying give it the Elvis treatment by adding bacon to it and frying and butter. The original Elvis, sandwich did not have bacon in it. If you go on YouTube, you can see a video from the BBC where they interviewed, the woman took care of his house and cooked for him and everything. She created the sandwich, and she cooks it on camera. No bacon in it. But, yeah, I do want to plus it up. I’m going to grate on a little Mexican chocolate. Okay, let’s give this Peanut Butter and Banana sandwich, plussed up with a little grated Mexican chocolate, a go. Mexican chocolate, obviously it’s chocolate. It’s got a little sugar. It’s got a little cinnamon. it’s going really well with the banana and really well with the peanut butter. But you know what? I kind of do want to plus it up one more time. That’s right, it’s a double plus up. I’m gonna give it the Grilled Cheese Treatment™ But not just any Grilled Cheese Treatment™. I’m using bacon grease. Okay, let’s get this Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich, plussed up with Mexican chocolate, and giving the Grilled Cheese Treatment™ using bacon grease, a go. The peanut butter gone all warm and gooey. It’s working really well with the chocolate and bacon and chocolate and bacon and peanut butter and bacon and banana. Come on. Alright, so the original Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich, clearly this is some sort of like a school sandwich after school sandwich. It’s not really intended to go up like against the Kentucky Hot Brown or Reuben or Banh MI But I think as that kind of sandwich it’s like a 7. It’s really tasty on its own. Plussed up with the Mexican chocolate, easily a 7 1/2 Plussed up with the Mexican chocolate and givien the Grilled Cheese Treatment™ using bacon grease, that’s an 8. And yes, I could have added bacon to the sandwich, but I don’t like to add meat to sandwiches that don’t already have it because it kind of steals focus. By using the bacon grease, it just was another ingredient that helps support the other ingredients in the sandwich and worked really well with everything in there. Definitely gonna finish that. I would make the original again anytime I would make the plussed up one anytime I would make the double plussed up one kind of sparingly because, you know, I don’t need to eat a lot of bacon grease. Alright, See you tomorrow.

  1. Bacon grease is the healthiest ingredient of those. More people need to wake up to the fact we've been lied to.

  2. I do believe bacon grease is what Elvis had his sandwich fried in. Genius plus-up! When I was a tot, my mom would make me fluffer-nutters with banana.

  3. Griddling it in bacon fat is a God tier plus up. 🤩🤩🤩

As a cyclist, I'd fuel with this pre ride, with great joy. My goodness 🤩🤩🤩

  4. I make toasted peanut butter, honey ,and banana. When its toasted the honey will get into the nooks of the bread.

  5. I got a suggestion for International Sandwich Sunday, the Swedish "Bulle med bulle". It's basically a "chokladboll" (chocolate ball with coconut flakes) pressed between two halves of a bread roll.

  6. My song “This Is How Elvis Died” (which was played on Dr Demento!) references the Elvis sandwich… “Bananas and bacon and peanut butter / was his favorite sandwich, along with uppers / and downers, and a bunch of other drugs”

  7. When I worked as a field researcher we made these every day, because they were easy, tasty, nutritious, and could survive being hauled around for hours in our backpacks.

  8. Had heard rumors of the legendary double plus-up, but wasn’t sure if I believed the rumors before now.

  9. Heh, I was thinking as a plus-up that chocolate or cinnamon would go REALLY well.
Turns out, I was right both times.

  10. The Elvis sandwich with peanut butter (and grape jelly) and bacon is called the Fool’s Gold sandwich and it was created by the Colorado Mine Company restaurant. He reportedly decided he wanted one late one night, got on his jet and flew to Denver to pick up a bunch of them for himself and his entourage. The sandwich is so famous that it has its own Wikipedia page.

  11. Slice Serrano chili rounds then pickle with lemon or lime juice… Spicy zesty flavor to punch through savory meals

  12. I guess people are conflating Elvis's peanut butter and banana sandwich with the Fool's Gold Loaf, a peanut butter, jelly, and bacon sandwich that Elvis and his friends flew from Graceland to Colorado just to eat.

  13. making it with unsweetened peanut butter is smart due to the date but then your banana should've been a Gros Michel because the cavendish banana wasn't popular!

  14. My favorite plus up for peanut butter and banana is orange marmalade. The citrus and banana go well together. 🙂

  15. Loved these growing up, still do; we toast the bread then spread PB and add banana after, serve open-face, delicious.

  16. Peanut butter and banana is a classic, I recently plussed mine up (much in the vein of the recent chocolate+apple sandwich) with apple slices, cinnamon, and nutmeg. with crunchy peanut butter and microwaving the apple slices so they resemble a pie filling? home run

  17. Thank you so much for your incredible channel. I appreciate videos that don't try to do too much or get too long. ❤ This channel is perfection

  18. (1.) 2 slices of white sandwich bread toasted
    (2.) butter toasted bread slices
(3.) on one slice spread peanut butter
(4.) on other slice spread real mayo
(5.) on either slice add banana cut in circle sections
    (6.) bring together & enjoy!

  19. I love that collaboration you did with Max Miller. I am a big fan of his channel also.

  20. I usually add molases to mine. It adds some sweetness and it cuts through the fattiness of the peanut butter.
