In the Rheinhessen region of Gundheim (district of Alzey-Worms), an unusual theft has occurred: Unknown perpetrators have extensively stolen grapes from two vineyards. The two affected winemakers discovered on Sunday morning upon arriving for the planned harvest of Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc grapes that nearly all the ripe grapes were gone.
According to police reports, the grapes were harvested from an area of about 8,000 square meters. The perpetrators apparently acted professionally: Around the vines, traces of vehicles were found, and grass and soil were clearly flattened. Investigators believe that a special harvesting vehicle and several transport vehicles were used for the crime.
The estimated damage amounts to several thousand euros. Since the winemakers had not visited their vineyards for several weeks, it is difficult to narrow down the time of the crime. According to police, it occurred between September 6 and 14.
The criminal police are now hoping for tips from the public. Witnesses who noticed suspicious individuals or vehicles in the vineyards of Gundheim during this period are asked to contact the Alzey police.
