We’re here on our 15th annual visit in a row (usually in the FLX in July-August). On Friday, my wife and I went to the Forge “Salon”—a great hang in a beautiful indoor/outdoor space with wines by the glass and bottle, food (charcuterie, tinned fish/shellfish), and music.

I talked to co-owner Rick Rainey for a few minutes (he’s a great guy who’s generous with his time) and asked him if he wanted to drink the wine. He said he loves old Riesling.

So we went back this evening with our friends for round 2 and drank the Prüm (and two Forge flights and some nosh). That’s Rick opening the bottle, which he did perfectly with the cork firm and intact. An aroma of honey and apricot and light petrol was apparent right away.

The wine was a beautiful golden-yellow.

Super smooth on the palate, moderate sweetness, and a nice smoky finish. Not a ton of acidity, but still a bright wine at this age.

Forge is a must-visit if you’re in the FLX.

My wife and I have been wanting to go to the finger lakes. I think we are gonna make it happen this upcoming spring! 15 years what an amazing streak!

As someone from northern Michigan wine territory, I enjoy what NY makes!

I’m thinking the smokiness you mention in the wine was probably the ripping acidity pulling the smoke from the oysters and tinned fish off your palate.

  5. That’s a great story! Beautiful weekend for you. I visited in September and bought 6 of the Caywood Riesling that we tasted in the flight. Cheers!

Forge and Rainey are class acts making great wine in a great place to visit. I’m sure you’ve seen the evolution of the spaces at the wineries over the past 15 years, I’m always pumped that there seems to be another one or two that are serving high quality nibbles in an attractive space whenever I get back. I’ll always love the chill, rustic nature of a lot of the wineries for visits, but I also appreciate being able to kick back in a nicely designed space with comfortable seating and food befitting the world class wines too.
