My daughter has been wanting to decorate a cake because she’s artistic and I used to make cakes years ago and she was interested in trying. So decided to make a cake themed after her favorite K-Pop group Stray Kids and specifically her favorite member Felix and the “Skzoo” animal that represents him. I thought her cake turned out adorable.
However, I almost ruined the whole cake by suggesting we buy Satin Ice buttercream at Michael’s. We went there so she could pick out decorations and I mentioned buying their buttercream because of limited time. She begged me to just make buttercream at home so the compromise was to cover the cake in homemade and buy a small tub of yellow for decorating. I’ve used Satin Ice fondant many times in the past and it’s fine so I figured this buttercream was probably better than buying Pillsbury or Duncan Hines. I was very wrong. It tasted like motor oil, like how a car service station smells. My daughter thought it tasted like plastic. Has anyone else experienced this or did I get a bad batch? If we had used it to cover the whole cake it would have been completely inedible. Never again.

No you’re right. My own daughter told me she thinks it tastes like plastic and so do I.

Your daughters got skills. Im impressed.

I dont know that brand of buttercream so I cant say, but if it was that bad it probably isnt much better in a good batch. Personally I think if you’re gonna make a homemade batch I wouldn’t bother buying anything, but that’s me.
