I learned this weekend that yeast can go bad after putting all the ingredients in a bread maker, then 3 hours later I present to you this brick.

As they would say on the Great British Bake Off, looks a bit stodgy.

Let it go stale then use it as catapult ammo for home defense

Looks like you actually forgot to add the yeast…based on the fact that I have also forgotten to add the yeast and it looked like that.

  4. Are you using the time delayed start on your bread maker to have fresh bread in the morning? If so keep the yeast away from the salt. I like to pour the yeast in the middle and if there is salt I put it along the edge.

Yeah, yeast can die off. Sometimes, you can’t be sure when, but after best by dates, there’s no guarantee.

Check the expiration date on your yeast jar or packet.

This is why you must always proof your yeast.

Bake it some more and you got yourself some hardtack.

The reason you do the “activation” bit for yeast is to check it is alive. If it doesn’t foam, it is dead.

You might be able to salvage this by cutting it really thin then baking it into hard flats in the oven. A little oil, salt, and spices and I bet it will be pretty good

It has a chalky texture, to be sure.

Freeze it, it’ll last forever. The yeast that is.
