A review. My options for spicy ramen are a bit limited as I’m vegan (and lots of spicy ramen is either made with meat broth or has “milk ingredients” for some reason), but this one was accidentally plant-based so I figured I’d try it.

Heat: 3/10. I basically didn’t even notice it at first, but it builds up over a while. Left my lips tingly but not much else. I can see how this would be spicy for normal folks but to someone with some tolerance this barely registers.

Flavour: 7/10. This was actually pretty tasty. Kind of reminded me of like a hot and sour soup broth? A bit of tang there which was not unpleasant. Despite this being labelled as a “smoky” flavour I didn’t detect any hint of smoke, and I’m pretty sensitive to that (e.g. I don’t enjoy the El Yucateco XXX because of the smoke flavour).

Overall: 6/10. I can’t say I was expecting much, and it met those expectations. The noodles themselves are a bit of an odd texture but they’re not bad at all, just different from most instant cup ramen I’ve had. Kind of underwhelming on all fronts; not good or bad, just decent. I probably won’t buy these again.

Yeah, so many ramens use tonkotsu (bone broth) for a rich, creamy, filling broth. It’s really good, but unfortunately, I’d imagine it’s quite hard to replicate without bones or meats.

  2. And the sodium in them is killer..this one is 1450mg…some of the flavors are upwards of 1800
