The most important event for the olive oil supply chain in Pakistan was held today in Islamabad. The olive oil summit attracted the presence of numerous producers, processors, representatives of major sector institutions, academic experts and Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain.
The organizers of the forum appreciated the role of our country in the development of olive growing in Pakistan. The ambassador of Italy opened the work of the summit. Marilina Armellin reminded those present of the importance of the olive sector for our country, the technological leadership with deep roots of Italian companies, and the role of CIHEAM of Bari and the Italian Development Cooperation in the implementation of the multi-year bilateral collaboration program. The growth of the olive sector in Pakistan is made possible by bilateral debt conversion agreements of the past decade.
The Pakistan Italian Debt Swap Agreement (PIDSA) has enabled the planting of 2,000 hectares of uncultivated and marginal land and the acquisition of technology and numerous technical assistance from Italian experts. Recently, the NARC testing laboratory was inaugurated, which has assumed a central function in Pakistan for quality certification of olive oil production with international standards.
The new laboratory enables the classification of extra virgin oils with chemical and sensory analyses that promote effective market positioning.
