Hey yall, am I going to burn my apartment down lol? I have a lot of experience grilling. I just moved into this apartment and I asked my property manager if i can have a grill and she said as long as you watch it. I need some experts opinion though. Worried about not only the fence but the deck above me.
P.s. got this bad boy second hand for 50 bucks with 2 propane tanks !

My brother/sister. Just cook on the stove, you won’t miss out on much. With this you stand to miss out on everything.

I have seen at apartment they could grill in their parking spot as long as they put it away, I know it doesn’t seem normal, but you can ask.
I’ve lived in so many places with small patio areas like this. I just skipped it unless it was a balcony with more of a metal fence and ventilation for the heat/smoke.
Good news is that you are smart and already see that it may become an issue. Not worth it in my opinion.
I love grilling and stove top cooking doesn’t have the same feeling, but it’s better to be safe than sorry OP.
I’d cook on it, imo it’ll be fine. It’s not like you’ve got a big charcoal grill out there.
Be sure to clean it thoroughly every now and then. And what I mean by that is remove the gates and scrub the inside of the firebix down. The number 1 cause of out of control flare-ups is excess oil residue.
I wouldn’t. Anything goes wrong, or you skip a cleaning and a grease fire flares up, you’re cooked. Literally. And so are your neighbors. Speaking of which, I doubt whoever has the deck directly above you would appreciate all the smoke rolling up through their deck. Probably would soak into anything they have on the deck and stink.
In my opinion, it’s just not meant to be. Not there.

Surprised your complex let you use it. Most would say hell no to a setup like this.
I would not use propane that close to my house. Flare ups happen, especially on propane.
You got a good deal on the grill and tanks, could prolly sell them for double if you wanted to. Can you move the grill from outside the little fence and from under the patio? Maybe cook on the other side of the fence

Idk about where you live but in Chicago that’s against the law because it’s a fire hazard especially since there is wood above it. I only know this because my uncle was a Sargent for the fire department here.
I’d take it out front, don’t risk it on that porch
Here are the things to ask yourself:
1. Do you have renters insurance and if so, would you be covered if something went wrong with the grill in this scenario?
2. Can you financially cover the damage should something happen?
If the answer is “no” to either of these, you should not do these. Don’t risk it for the brisket.

So many apartments burn down every year because of this. A small fire outside of the intended burners inside the grill will probably eventually happen. Hopefully it stays inside the grill when it does it you choose to keep it there and use it.
Can you wheel it outside of that fenced in area and not bother anyone? That’s a perfect storage spot but not so much for actual grilling.
Is there a gate you could wheel the grill out of while in use? Great storage space but not a good place to have a massive accidental flare up.

I think you know the answer if you’re asking. This is very unsafe and as much as I love grilling I would never do this even with landlord permission.
Yeah no. You would need to keep it clean constantly to make sure there were no flare-ups. You need air flow around it. You would need to monitor it constantly. I would not chance it.

Ya, don’t do that. You’re probably breaking multiple fire codes. The fence on two sides is flammable, the deck above you is flammable, the siding is meltable. One grease fire could burn down multiple people’s homes.

Keep it low and don’t walk away and you’ll be fine, would not hurt to have a hose or fire extinguisher nearby just in case but that should always be within responsible distance anyways. If you’re a seasoned griller you’ll be fine. Just empty the grease trap when you are finished.

Even if it didn’t catch anything on fire I am wondering how toasty your neighbors feet would be if they walked out on their deck mid grill.

The instructions for the grill also state to be a certain distance away from buildings.
The manual states it must have 3’ of clearance on the sides and back.
