Itโ€™s a little more work than using a rice cooker, but it tastes so good!๐Ÿ˜‹

It works okay, but electronic rice cookers are way more convenient.

Same way you cook it on a stove. Add the right amount of rice and water, bring to a boil, simmer rice for X amount of time (usually 20-30minutes) once water boils off you should have perfectly cooked rice. The trick is getting the water to rice ratio right, applying the right amount of heat, and not fucking up the timing. Which is why most people use rice cookers. Rice is so simple in a rice cooker and fairly easy to fuck up outside of one. Real pro chefs also soak the rice for a period of time before cooking and washing is of course important no matter how you prepare it. They often add things like mirin, rice vinegar, or amazake to the rice while it cooks or soaks as well to bring the flavor up a notch. Go watch Iron Chef and youโ€™ll see them put the wildest things in a donabe or rice cooker, with the rice, to change the flavor.

I was eating at a high end Japanese restaurant in Kyoto once and the chef did this awesome thing where he served you the same rice out of a donabe at three different intervals to show you the diner how much the flavor and texture can change even in just a 10-15minute period of letting it cook/rest longer. He was so proud and excited about it. It was a really fun experience.

I use a donabe to cook rice everyday. And contrary to what people say itโ€™s no more work than a rice cooker. I have a Ginpo 3 cup donabe, I wash then soak 2 cups of rice for at least 30 minutes then I add the rice with approximately 400 cc of water to the pot. Bring it to a boil then turn off heat and wait 20 minutes. I have a double lid donabe, inner and outer lid type. Iโ€™ve been doing it this way for years now. Before I got married I used a top of the line Zojirushi rice cooker and wasted a lot of rice bc of letting it sit in warm mode for too long plus itโ€™s harder to clean. Choose high quality rice and use a donabe you wonโ€™t regret it.

I have a 2 cup one with double lids. I use it to cook brown rice for my dogs every few days.

I also have a 3 cup cast iron one I use for us humans.

But tbh, the rice cooker that I have cooks the rice just as well as the pots.

No because I donโ€™t have one! I just use a regular pot on the stove but I bet this tastes even better

Only if Iโ€™m making steamed rice with proteins and veggies. I donโ€™t want to have to deep clean my rice cooker.

Matsutake rice for example. Every month I make a savory rice with kombu, dried sardines, dried scallops, ginger, and bonito. Itโ€™s tossed with green onions and is the base for my daily meals.

When I am busy I use rice cooker. I am not busy. It is donabe. For two people my husband and myself.
