I’m a sucker for a pretty box and a fancy fork and was influenced by all the ads, so I treated myself to the new tuna belly offering from Fishwife. $75 for three 4oz tins and a fancy fork.
I cracked a tin of it today and ate it with some crusty bread and enjoyed it. It was good looking long strips of slightly firm tuna belly in tasty oil. Smell was a little fishy but taste was mild and the oil and bread paired nicely with it.
I’ve never tried tinned ventresca before, but love to eat tuna belly as sushi/sashimi. Closest I can compare it to is the Ortiz Bonito del Norte which I really like, and looking forward to trying their ventresca.
Fishwife is not know for their reasonable pricing so I knew what I was getting into and no regrets. Would I buy it again? Probably not, but looking forward to enjoying the other 2 tins.

drool I had some real nice tuna belly yesterday in a wine bar with some Japanese hot sauce made it better, it looked like a buttercup boat
I divorced Fishwife a long time ago. She was asking for too much and fell too in love with herself.
The espinaler yellowfin ventresca is fantastic at $10-$12 a tin.
I look forward to trying it
Tonnino belly tins are quite nice and $7ish at local stores around here. Ortiz you know about (I just got a tin in, yay). It will be interesting to see what you think versus some other ventresca. Because even the Tonnino ventresca is way better than most random tuna out there.
What are your payments?
Mines in the mail! I’m so excited!
That price is pretty insane. Fishwife is out of control.
I’ll drop the ~$12 for the chili crisp salmon once in a blue moon but this is getting out of control.
I happened to be at the store today and found a fishwife display. They ranged from $13-$15 a can. Based on what I’m reading in the comments, I should have bought it all!.
They are annoying with their crazy prices but tuna belly is my favorite. They got me with the included fork though.
Just earlier today I read a review here completely panning this tuna, and now here you are saying how much you enjoyed it! That’s only two opinions, but still quite a wide range of opinions. Hmmm….
I purchased this as a gift. The packaging alone is stunning!
Now you can keep the pretty box for display! I see nothing wrong with buying something you know you’re gonna like– and liking it with no regrets while also acknowlodging legitimate critiques/shortcomings. It’s how we can improve
Ventresca de bonito del Norte, from Cantabric sea, it’s different to ventresca de atún which usually comes from down near Cadiz. Both great, expensive, but not this expensive if buying in Spain obviously (where there’s heaps of range).
