I’m a home gardener growing a little bit of everything, but mostly hot peppers. This year, I raised 150 varieties, with 491 total plants. My harvest goes towards making hot sauce for a free, sit-down restaurant in my community that serves 300 people a day, mostly unhoused.
I also teach an annual free hot sauce making/canning workshop at an educational teaching garden run by our county’s food bank.
Today was the workshop, and I had a fantastic turnout! On display were a sample of all 150 varieties on paper plates with their names and SHU. Participants got to try as many as they wanted. Plus, everyone was given a pint jar of hot sauce. They also got to take home peppers to make their own.

I share this with you because I am only one person with a 3000 sf backyard garden. I’m making a small, but meaningful difference in my community. In this time of food insecurity, maybe we should all think about growing a little extra to share with pantries. If you’re a pepper grower, the best ones to donate are bells, jalapeños, Serranos, and poblanos. Even small amounts are appreciated.

What a great day!

Wow, that’s an amazing range of peppers and an even better story. What a great way to share your garden and peppers with the community!

What’s your favorite hot sauce recipe to make or pepper combo to use?

If there is at least just one person who leaves that event inspired, this is so worth it!

Awesome stuff, looks like a lot of work!

If I had the time, money and land to do this, this is what I’d be doing.
