DANVILLE, CA —A beloved Sicilian restaurant in Danville is closing its doors after just a year and a half.
Isola Osteria, which opened in February 2024, will close Aug. 30 due to family health challenges, owner Angelo Dalo wrote in a social media post.
“As some of you may know, our family has been facing serious health challenges,” he said. “After much reflection, we’ve come to realize that the most important thing we can do right now is to step away and focus fully on spending time together. Family has always been at the heart of everything we do—our food, our traditions, and the love we pour into every dish. Now, we must live out that same spirit by being present for the moments that matter most.”
Dalo was born in Sicily, but his family eventually moved to San Francisco, where they opened up Caffe Sport in North Beach and Trattoria La Siciliana in Berkeley. Dalo wanted to open up a restaurant specializing in the Sicilian food of his family, and situate it in a place that felt a bit like Sicily. Isola Osteria opened on 100 Railroad Avenue, the former site of Sliver Pizzeria, where people could sit outside in the warm weather and enjoy food personally approved by his Sicilian mother.
“For the last year and a half, this little place has been more than a restaurant—it’s been an extension of our home, our culture, and our family. Many of you have become more than guests; you’ve become part of our story,” Dalo wrote. “Though this chapter is closing, the memories and connections we’ve made will always remain. We hope our food brought you comfort, joy, and a sense of family—and that you carry a bit of that spirit forward.”
He also encouraged patrons to visit Agrodulce Osteria, the sister location in Berkeley that opened in 2020 and features much of the same type of food. Anyone with an outstanding gift certificate is encouraged to call or text 510-912-1231 about usage after Aug. 30.
