Can this cause a problem sealing? I just bought this jar from Goodwill and it’s one of those tall wide mouth jars. The top rim is flawless but the thread has a chip and wondering if this is a problem?

I wouldn’t use it for canning anymore. It would have a higher chance of breaking under the heat stress. I have a jar that’s damaged in a similar way, I just use it to hold cutlery. Using it to hold nuts and bolts is perfectly reasonable.

You CAN can with it. This shouldn’t affect the jars ability to seal, but as mentioned in the other comment it is much more prone to breaking due to heat.

But if it doesn’t break it’ll work.

    Edit: But it might break

It wouldn’t cause a problem with sealing, but a chip anywhere means compromised integrity, which means it would have a much higher chance of exploding on you. Definitely don’t use anything chipped

  5. Nuts or nuts and bolts. It has been compromised for canning.

  6. I wouldn’t use it for canning. Storage of dry goods or as a cup, sure, but I wouldn’t put it through the canning process.

I have vintage Mason’s jars that are potentially older than a hundred years and had a massive flake tooken off the thread’s like 8th inch of glass missing still works great

I wouldn’t can with it. I’d fill it with something totally useless or make a candle it…
