New Orleans native Charlie Andrews demonstrates how to make a homemade Apple Crisp. A Crisp is a fruit filling added into a baking pan with a crunchy crumb topping with oatmeal and pecans added on top and baked in the oven. You can get 9 to 12 servings from this dish. It’s a perfect fall classic dessert and it’s absolutely delicious. I hope you all will give this recipe a try.

Hey, what’s happening everybody? Today I’m going to show you how to make my delicious apple crisp. It’s made with fresh apples with a crispy crunchy crumb topping. So, let me show you how to do it. So, for our crumb topping, we’re going to add 1 cup of allpurpose flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, a half a teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Give this a quick stir. Add one stick of unsalted butter softened. We’re going to take a pastry cutter and cut the butter into the flour. Next, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, a half a teaspoon of dried oatmeal, and a half a teaspoon of chopped pecans. Give this a quick stir. Cover this and place this into your refrigerator. Rinse off your apples with cold water. Next, you’re going to take a fruit peeler and peel all eight large Granny Smith apples. You’re going to take a knife and you’re going to cut one large lemon in half. I’ve added 8 to 10 cups of water into this large bowl. We’re going to squeeze one whole lemon in there. And we’re going to give this a quick stir. We’re going to take an apple core and align it to the center of the apple and push down. And there we go. Next, you’re going to trim off the edge of the apple slices. And once done, you’re going to take each apple slice and cut it in half. Just like that. Take your apple slices and add them into the lemon and water solution. And from there, you’re going to let the apple slices soak for about 5 minutes. Once the apples are finished soaking, you’re going to add them into a large strainer. To make the apple filling, add 2/3 cup of sugar, 2/3 cup of brown sugar, 3 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, a half a teaspoon of allspice, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Give that a quick stir. Add your apple slices in there and stir this continuously for 5 minutes. And the apples will release their juices like how you see here. Here I have a large strainer with a large pot underneath it. Add your apple slices into the strainer. Then we’re going to set this on the side. Next, we’re going to add 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Give that a quick stir and let this simmer for about 1 to 2 minutes or until the mixture thickens. Add your apple slices in there and give this a quick stir. Here we have our 13×9 in baking pan. Add your apple slices in there and spread it around as evenly as possible. Shake your baking pan to make everything even. Next, we’re going to take our crumb topping and we’re going to sprinkle all of that right on top. Now, it is ready to be baked. Place this into a preheated 375Β° oven on the middle rack for 30 minutes. Okay, our apple crisp is done. Let’s go ahead and remove this out of the oven. And you’re going to let this cool for about 1 to 2 hours before serving. It could be served either warm or cold. Now, I’m going to go ahead and try this. And only thing I need now is some ice cream cuz it is absolutely delicious. And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Homemade apple crisp made from scratch by a New Orleans native.

9 to 12 servings
What you'll need
4 pounds eight large granny smith apples
1 medium-sized lemon
All-purpose flour
Sugar
Brown sugar
Salt
Unsalted butter (Softened)
Dried oatmeal
Chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds
Vanilla extract
Cinnamon
Allspice
Cornstarch
Tools you'll need
9 by 13-inch glass or metal pan
Pastry cutter
Fruit peeler
Apple corer
Preparation of ingredients
Crumb topping
Note- If you want a thicker amount of crumb topping on top of the apples, add 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour and 1 and 1/2 sticks unsalted butter softened. From there cut the butter into the flour. Everything else remains the same.
Step 1- Add 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon salt into a medium sized bowl. Stir all ingredients together until combined.
Step 2- Add 1 stick unsalted butter (Softened) and cut the butter into the flour using a pastry cutter until the mixture is a crumbly texture. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 cup dried oatmeal, and 1/2 cup chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds. Stir all ingredients together until combined. Place into fridge until the topping is ready to be added on top of the apple slices.
Apples and lemon
Step 3- Rinse all apples and lemon off with cold water. Cut one medium-sized lemon in half.
Lemon water solution
Step 4- Add 8 to 10 cups cool water into a large bowl. Place a small mesh strainer over the bowl. Squeeze both halves of the medium-sized lemon into the mesh strainer allowing the lemon juice to go into the water. Stir all ingredients together.
Apples
Step 5- Peel all apples using a fruit peeler. Align the center of the apple corer onto the center of each apple and apply pressure and push the apple corer down onto the apple. Discard the apple core.
Step 6- Trim off the straight edge of each apple piece with a knife. This is to ensure that the apple corer has been completely removed. From there cut each piece of apple in half going along the length. All apple slices should be thick.
Step 7- Add the cut apple slices into the lemon and water solution. Move the apple slices around in the lemon water solution. Let soak for 5 minutes. Drain the apple slices in a strainer and set aside.
Apple filling
Step 8- Add 2/3 cup sugar, 2/3 cup brown sugar, 3 tablespoons cornstarch, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon allspice, and 1/4 teaspoon salt into a large bowl. Stir all ingredients together until combined. Add apple slices and stir continuously for 5 minutes. At first the apple slices will be difficult to stir. As you continue to stir the apples will get more easier to stir and the apples will release their juices.
Step 9- Place a strainer on top of a large pot. Add the apple slices into the strainer and stir the apple slices. This will allow the juices to go into the pot. Remove the strainer with the apples in it off the top of the pot and set aside.
Preheat fire to medium heat.
Step 10- Add 2 tablespoons unsalted butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract into the liquid and stir. Let simmer for 1 to 2 minutes.
Turn your fire off.
Step 11- Add the apple slices and stir until the slices are coated with the liquid. Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes.
Assembling and baking the apple Crisp
Preheat oven to 375-degrees F.
Step 12- Add the prepared apple filing into your baking pan. Spread the filling around the baking pan as evenly as possible. To make everything more even, shake your baking pan.
Step 13- After being in the fridge for the for a few minutes, the crumb topping will be solid. Break up the crumb topping with your hands. Next sprinkle all of the crumb topping on top of the apple slices. Make sure the crumb topping is covering all of the apples. Gently press the crumb topping on top of the apple slices with your hands.
Step 14- Place into a preheated 375-degree oven on the middle rack, bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the apple crisp from the oven. Let cool for 2 to 3 hours before serving. It can be served warm or cold. If you want to reheat the crisp, place into a preheated 325-degree oven on the middle rack for 15 to 20 minutes.
more even, shake your baking pan.
