Deerfield Beach – A two-day celebration of the culture of Italy with wine stomping and spaghetti eating contests, beach bocce, and homemade pasta takes place this weekend at the Italian Festival on Ocean Way.

With proceeds benefiting the Italian Cultural Society of America and the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward, the event runs from 12 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 1 and 12 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 2.

Festival Chairman John DiPrato is once again bringing in musicians from Italy to highlight the entertainment. They include the Pulcinella Orchestra from Alvito, Italy playing Baroque and classical  compositions and Argentine/Italian tenor Carlos DeAntonis. DeAntonis appeared in season 12 of America’s Got Talent and has held leading roles in opera and theater. Currently he is a member of Music For America.

New this year will be a visit from the mayor of Alvito, Luciana Martini, here to promote the possibility of making Deerfield Beach the sister city of her medieval town of 2,000 people.

Located in Italy’s Apennene Range, Alvito offers spectacular views and historic architecture such as a 12th Century fortress and the Church of Santa Maria Assumption known for its beautiful frescos.

Martini and Deerfield Beach Mayor Todd Drosky will address the crowd and exchange gifts on Saturday at 5 p.m. South Florida radio personality Paul Castronova will emcee the festival at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Along with 16 vendors selling authentic Italian food, the street performers and a kids’ zone, the wine stomping contest and the spaghetti eating contest at 3:30 p.m. on both days will be a highlight of the festival. Bocce courts will be set up in the sand all day both days and live music will be continuous throughout the weekend.

DiPrato said he stages the event each year to give the public a chance to experience true Italian culture – its music and its food. DiPrato is a member of the Sheriff’s Foundation, which supports special projects such as college tuition for the children of first responders killed in the line of duty, canine programs, and Deerfield’s Explorer and Cadet organizations.
