Gretel is still one of the 3-5 best burgers in Chicago and one of my absolute favorite restaurants. Everything on the menu is great and all of the cocktails are home runs. If you haven't gone you should definitely check it out.

I had a friend in town from Australia who's never been to Chicago before and he agreed that it was the best burger he's ever had in his life.

It’s a solid burger, I would put it in my top 10.

That burger is a little too under-done for my tastes. The rest of it looks great!

  3. Probably the most overrated burger I’ve had. It’s not bad but nothing special imo.

  4. I went last night and had the chicken liver mousse and the tonkasu Ramen. The liver mousse was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. It was outstanding. I wouldn’t get the Ramen again. The broth was bland and the ingredients in it were way too salty. I’m not quite sure why they put pickled turnips in ramen but they do. My wife had the French onion soup which was very good. I very much enjoyed the burger last time I went. I got my fries well done and they were perfect.

I like gretel, but I’d rather go a couple blocks down the road and get a double smashburger from Red Hot ranch. $7.75 with the fries, and absolutely delicious.

  6. i do not agree. ive been there a few times and nothing to write home about

Their french onion soup is top tier, might have to swing by this week for some

Took some friends from out of town there last year and we all felt pretty meh about our food – burger and prime rib were on the cold side, fries were soggy, mac and cheese was room temp, nachos reminded me of every dive bar’s nachos.

Might have just caught them on a bad night, definitely want to give the burger another try.

I was there a couple of weeks ago, and I was very happy with everything. Great cocktails!

I had a lobster roll, and split some brussels sprouts and elote riblets with friends. I’d get the harissa carrots next time instead of the elotes.

Co-sign..don’t sleep on that chicken sandwich too

The Chicago hype machine is pretty bad. There’s just no accountability. Reddit would have you believe that Gretel and Leavitt Street Inn are world-class burger joints. They’re just fine, and sometimes not even the best in their neighborhood. Sorry, not sorry.

Tbh it’s insane they sit people in their basement. Completely ruined the meal and visit.

The Mac and the Cesaer are what really stand out for me at Gretel, but I’m not complaining about the burger, that’s for sure.

Kinda cool how it looks like a hamburger from the outside, and then ham salad on the inside.

An overrated burger at best. We been there a couple times and tried it more than once but still mid.

  16. I like my steak still mooing and grazing, and I think that burger is undercooked

I love their burger and French onion soup but actually think the Mac and cheese is simply “pretty good.” Way too much bacon. Let the cheese shine!

This looks like a place that chefs and cooks would like to dine. 👍🔥

I like the chicken sandwich and french dip a lot better than the burger tbh

Love this suggestion, will have to check them out! I’m part of a project to build a grassroots map of small, local businesses who are improving their communities. Take a look if that sounds interesting to you and maybe [nominate](https://www.forbetterproject.org/business-nomination) a few of your favorite Chicago businesses!

Hard hard pass. I’ve given that burger three chances and it’s always been undercooked, over salted and wildly messy
