My genius uncle decided to paint over a rusty grill using the cheapest spray paint possible, i know it is NOT food safe at all and cooking with this would be a bad idea so im trying to remove it

I already tried using paint thinner and a wire brush but its not coming out, i would appreciate any suggestions at this point

Sand blaster, or just new grates. They’re not expensive.

Wirebrush the hell out of it.Use a wire wheel on your drill. If you have to then burn it off

  3. Paint stripper would work but you don’t want to use that on a cooking surface. Not sure it would ever get fully burned off i would not trust it at least.

Honestly i’d just buy another grate.

I honestly would just try and replace them. Depending on how rusty they were, they may have been due for a replacement anyhow.

You don’t have to get some that are top dollar – just good enough.

    Fiiirrreeeeeee 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

  6. Grinder with wire wheel followed by heat burnoff. But it will only work if the wire wheel can get to the crevices which is a major pain in the ass. It will probably be cheaper to buy a fresh set than your time is worth.

  7. There is no way to get all the paint off. You must up just accepted we all do it at times. The only thing I would do to be safe is to replace the grates. You might not be happy about it but stainless steel grates you never have to worry about rust. They are more expensive than cast iron but so much better. Just replace the grates be safe for you and your family

Not risking it. Spend the money to replace it. You can get them from HD or Lowe’s. That’s what I like about Weber. Replacement parts are easy to find. Ace even just opened up 10 minutes away from me.

Just buy replacement grates in stainless steel.

Can we hear more about this uncle? This can’t be the only dumb thing he’s done. . .

  11. If they are cast iron, I would try recasting them, though success depends on how far the rust has gotten, you might need some replacement iron or coal to remove oxygen from the rust. Smelt to liquid, pour to mold, re-season to desired blackness. Should get hot enough in process to burn off anything harmful in the paint.

Burn if off, but preferably not in your grill.

Unless I’m mistaken that’s a chargriller. Go to chargriller.com, buy a new set of grates. They’re $10 each. If it’s the pro, or smoking pro it’s $40 for a new set. In the future, just go at them with a wire brush, rub with oil and season like you would a cast iron pan.

It new grates. Not worth the hassle and possibility of poisoning

Cheaper option: Build yourself a hot wood fire (fire pit or a weber kettle grill with a bunch of charcoal). Throw it/them in.

Less cheap option: Replace with stainless steel and never worry about rust ever again.
