Wine imports to Germany have significantly increased in value in the first half of 2025 compared to the period in 2024. Despite a minimal decrease in quantity of 0.8 percent to 647 million liters, the value grew by 7.1 percent to 1.29 billion euros. The average price per liter rose by 7.9 percent to two euros. These figures come from the Spanish industry association Interprofesional del Vino de España (OIVE). Spain leads in quantity, especially in bulk wine, but loses slightly in bottled wines. Italy is thus strengthening its position in the upper price segment, particularly with bottled wines. France is gaining market share thanks to high-priced sparkling and branded wines. Additionally, Bag-in-Box wines are developing into a growth segment in the German trade.
The largest supplier by value (525 million euros) is Italy, which even achieved eleven percent more in Germany. France follows with 360 million euros and an increase of 14 percent. Spanish wines lost 2.8 percent in value. With 225 million liters, Spain delivered the largest quantity ahead of Italy and France. Notably, there is an increase in value for wines from Austria (+19.3 percent), which also achieved the largest quantity increase of 15.5 percent and ranks fourth. Unsurprisingly, there is a decline in wines from the USA (-29.6 percent). Australia also lost twelve percent in value.
Divided by wine segments, the report shows that bottled still wines increased in value by 9.4 percent to 819 million euros, and the quantity by 3.6 percent to 248 million liters. Italy and France together hold almost 70 percent market share here. Sparkling wine imports increased in value by 8.4 percent to 206.2 million euros. France only increased the quantity by 3.6 percent, but the value by over 18 percent. Italy is in second place with an increase of 1.6 percent, Spain in third place, but with a strong loss in quantity (-14 percent) and value (-41 percent). Here too, Austria was able to increase the quantity of exports by 24 percent and nearly triple the value. There were also significant increases in Bag-in-Box (BiB): the quantity grew by ten percent to around 16 million liters, and the value increased by 11.5 percent to almost 28 million euros.
In contrast, bulk wine lost over four percent in quantity to 356 million liters and 1.5 percent in value to 241.7 million euros.
