A staple of Wimberley’s culinary scene has unexpectedly called it a day. Dos Olivos Market, a popular epicurean shop and cafe, announced the permanent closure of its flagship on Friday, October 31, ending its run as one of the Hill Country town’s favorite gathering spots.

“We’re deeply thankful for seven incredible years of memories, laughter, and community, for every guest who dined with us, every friend made, and every moment shared around our tables,” the restaurant owners wrote on social media. “Wimberley will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

Father and daughter Rafael and Rebecca Varela founded the concept near Wimberley’s town square in 2018. According to their website bio, their aim was to “connect top producers of quality wines, beers and gourmet foods with customers that are searching for unique and authentic experiences.”

The pair stocked the shelves with premium olive oils, tinned fish, preserves, and other gourmet goods. And guests could find everything they needed for a tapas party, including jamon Iberico, imported olives, and, of course, Spanish wines.

For weekend visitors, the shop also served as popular spot to grab a quick bite. The casual counter service cafe sold a globally inspired array of dishes like chicken karaage, tuna crudo tostadas, barbacoa doughnuts, and whipped feta — all meant to be paired with the extensive bottle list.

Since opening the Wimberley shop, Dos Olivos has expanded in Central Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. Although the owners did not specify why they put the flagship to bed, they did say they plan to keep their three other outposts open.

“While this chapter comes to a close, our story continues down the road in Buda, Dripping Springs, and Harlingen, where we hope to welcome you again soon for the same food, wine, and warmth that define Dos Olivos Market,” they wrote.
