Italian parsley is an inexpensive way to brighten up soups, scrambled eggs, and grain salads. Think back about whether you’ve used this herb in the past two weeks, because a California grower has announced a recall of its Italian parsley due to salmonella contamination.

On October 28, Pacific International Marketing recalled 474 cases of Italian parsley after a sample taken on October 6 tested positive for Salmonella. Pacific shipped its parsley to wholesalers between September 22 and September 25, 2025. The shelf life of Italian parsley is 18 days from harvest, or October 10, 2025, so it’s unlikely this fresh herb is still in your refrigerator.

Salmonella can cause a serious foodborne illness. If you think you may have eaten contaminated parsley and experienced symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and fever, report your experience to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

How To Identify the Recalled Parsley 

The leafy herb was distributed to wholesalers across eight states: Arizona, California, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia, Ohio, and Nevada. It’s unclear which retailers have sold the contaminated parsley; however, its shelf life expired on October 10, so any contaminated parsley still in your refrigerator would have rotted by now.

This recall affects only Italian parsley, also called flat-leaf parsley. It has dark green, smooth, broad leaves. On the other hand, curly parsley has dense, curly leaves and is not affected by the recall.

What To Do With the Recalled Parsley

If you think you had the contaminated herb in your refrigerator, deep-clean the impacted areas to prevent the bacteria from spreading. If you froze or dehydrated store-bought parsley in the past few weeks, discard it immediately.

Report your experience to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration if you experienced symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and fever after recently consuming Italian parsley. When in doubt, contact your healthcare provider.
