Credit: Jordan VergeMaine’s Italian sandwich, similar to the New York hero or Philly hoagie, was created by baker Giovanni Amato around 1902.
According to LoveFood, Giovanni Amato began selling loaves of Italian bread filled with meats, cheese, and vegetables to dock workers on Portland’s waterfront. Amato’s legacy lives on through his namesake sandwich shop, now a beloved regional chain with over 40 locations across the East Coast.
