The Japanese restaurant served an extensive menu of sushi and other Japanese cuisine.

A Japanese restaurant in Brookline, known for its extensive menu of sushi and shoji decor, is closing after 27 years in business.

FuGaKyu broke the news on Facebook on Oct. 31.

“We regret to announce that our owner decided to cease operations due to his personal reasons — effective Nov. 5, 2025,” the Facebook post read. “With deepest gratitude, we thank every patron who has graced our tables and shared countless memories with us over the years.”

According to the restaurant’s website, FuGaKyu opened in 1998 in Coolidge Corner. MassLive reported that the restaurant once had other locations in Lynnfield and Sudbury, but both have since shuttered.

An outpouring of memories and best wishes were posted on social media from former diners in response to the closure news.

“We came the first week you opened. After moving away, this was always my first stop,” a Facebook user commented. “Wishing you the absolute best in the future, and thank you for some of the best sushi experiences I have had. The Ika tobiko appetizer from the 90s was my favorite.”

“I am so saddened to read this. I go there almost weekly,” another user commented. “The food has always been outstanding with so many innovative menu options. The service is so genuinely warm and attentive. I always feel so welcome. This phenomenal institution will be immeasurably missed, and I wish the best to the owners and the many staff who have worked so hard to provide a consistent top-notch dining experience.”
