Screaming eagle
Zinfandel
Caymus
Cab’ (especially when referred to as such)
Cabernet Sauvignon. Sure, there are some nice examples, but the way people go after it, it’s like they don’t know ow there are other options.
Super Tuscans
Cabernet Sauvignon
Perhaps unpopular opinion; but with today’s price v pre Covid: Tignanello.
(~€90 v ~€140)
Whispering Angel
Any Wines that achieve an undeserved following purely through label appeal, or hip and cool marketing. Swallowed up by the young, naive and ignorant.
The easy answer is Caymus and related manipulated wines like Meiomi, the Prisoner, etc.
Cult Napa & Super Tuscans
Ornellaia. Absolutely NOT worth the price
Plenty of edgy natural wines which go for hundreds of bucks but are just faulty
I missed yesterday’s, I LOVE seeing Barbera d’Alba as runner up – it’s my go-to red, I’m obsessed with it.
Overrated? Probably a California Cab Sav, IMO
Rombauer Chardonnay.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is a close second.
Both are decent examples of what to expect from their respective grape and regions. But they are not deserving of the pricing they get nor the praise, imo. You can find a dozen better Napa/ Sonoma Chardonnays or Valdadige Pinot Grigio for less $ with a blindfold on in a tornado.
Bread & Butter Pinot Noir
Prosecco
Caymus
Caymus
Champagne
Prosecco
Primitivo. And I say this while drinking a Ridge Pagani Ranch Zinfandel, which is a great wine.
Especially in Central Europe and among the Vivino crowd, Primitivo is incredibly popular and highly rated, yet, I’ve not come across many outstanding examples of Primitivo (though I’ve had some). Most taste very rich and jammy, with a very high alcohol content and little precision.
Natural wine, the one that should taste like a wine fault because that’s how natural wine should taste like
Veuve Clicquot
Caymus or any other big overoaked infused with megapurple Napa cab.
