Tuna Belly by Fishwife

The newest edition to Fishwife's line up. Albacore tuna belly is delicious, rich and silky experience. It normally feels special to be eating it, transporting you in into feelings of bliss.
That wasn't this can in the slightest. It felt and chewed more like albacore loin packed in olive oil. Although not entirely as dry as loin but still not what I would expect a can of tuna belly for $25.
I know, I get it… you pay a premium price for a fancy fork, "gold" embossing on the packaging and name.
I am not one to shy away from a pricey tin but the experience should be backing up the price and that is not the case here.

Maybe it was my current mindset when I jumped online to snatch this but for some reason I thought it was packed in butter, not entirely sure how or why I thought that when I pulled the trigger. I soon realized after I confirmed my purchase that.. nope.. it's in olive oil.
So for $25, would the experience have been better with butter? My opinion, this would have been more reasonable if that was the case. but thays a mute point I suppose.
I'm a fan of Fishwife, with the exception of a few of their products that are in my opinon mediocre at a premium price tag. This one falls right into that category.

Skip the puffs and move straight to pass.

  1. Awww man – what a huge let down expecting tender buttery unctuous luxury and getting a chewy standard tuna product.

Good to know that this is not the speciality tin it looks it, for people who are looking to treat the fish-ianado in the house

    Santa: take note

After all that hype… disappointing, indeed. Thanks for saving me the bucks… I was tempted to try. I’ll stick with Ortiz, my current favorite. I was hoping we would see you sitting in that pool at the end. 😆

This reminds me of the current weed game. Great packing, mid contents.

Great to hear the honesty without sugar coating!

This looks very similar to the $8 tuna belly tin (I think Lucas? I can’t remember) I had recently – not the buttery feel of fatty tuna but more dry and really unremarkable. Maybe the branding is the $17 markup?

Oh Fishwife. Never disappoints when it comes to disappointment. Unlike most of their products this one doesn’t even look like it’s worth picking up on sale.

  7. Oh you did go and get it! I really appreciate that you did, because you took one for the team and the sub here.

I don’t know what it is with the flashiness and the “boutique” feel they’re trying to sell- With the bright colors, wordy packaging, and the “story” of Fishwife? It’s all a bit melodramatic. Especially factoring in $25 dollars for tuna belly!!!

The Island Creek tuna belly in butter is $25 a can I think, excellent over rice

Tyler out here continuing the fishy-lord’s work, bless ya home dawg. 🙏 🫡

Also, Tyler have you had Dace yet? Had it a while back, unique flavor, blew my mind. 😋

“Fishwife… gave it bright colors, made it fun.” See, this is exactly what cracks me up – they managed to fool a lot of people into thinking their products were not only worth the hefty price of admission, but worth seeking out in order to do so too. They have a great marketing team, I will give them that lol. I have a healthy dose of skepticism when it comes to companies that attempt to premiumize things traditionally considered commodities.

Thanks so much Ty!! I’ve heard soo much about fishwife I’m def not gonna buy frm them no thanks 🙂‍↔️ for $25 a tin I need the tin to knock my socks off ! 😂

Its like tinned fish brands are taking the approach of wine labels. Im always skeptical about how much goes into a label vs the product. You can have a bottle that looks beautiful and then the description on the back is so intense and wordy, but then the product is just table wine level. I’d rather buy the most basic labeled product than the most elegantly labeled product.

  14. Thanks as always, Tyler! Great info, great presentation.

I haven’t really found tuna belly to be worth the price tag on any of the few I’ve tried in the tin. For the price, it’s all been disappointing. It tastes good, just don’t see it tasting good enough to support the huge premium.

Is there one out there that will make me change my mind?

Tuna belly is wasted in a tin, and I’m a massive tin4win guy
