I was looking through an old box of random belongings of my late grandmother at my mom’s house today. She was born in 1912 in the US Deep South.

The box was over 20 years old. She definitely had racist ideology, so I wasn’t surprised that she owned this tomb…but hot damn it was a shock on a Saturday.

I have posted the distasteful cover and spine along with the TOC and index of recipes. I thought it would bring some interesting discussion amongst our group.

The recipes themselves are interesting and some look delicious, but yeah, there’s a lot of overt and casual racism embedded in the commentary and obviously the cover.

Having a normal human that happens to be black on the cover of an old book isn’t always racism

I’m having trouble finding the racism here

that cover isn’t “distasteful”, that’s literally just a normal ass outfit for a black woman in savannah at the time

  5. I don’t see anything about the cover or the spine that are offensive?

It’s only racist if it was written by a white person using stolen/unattributed recipes from people of colour. Literally nothing about the appearance of the book is racist.
